X5 Deals Coming?

Looking at leasing a X3 or possibly an X5 if I can get a good deal.

1) With the release of the new model will BMW be discounting the inventory of X5's?
2) Best way to get a deal - bmw's site or dealer?
3) Is there a favorite? I see it as:
A) 50i best performance but gas would be annoying
B) 35i great compromise between performance and gas
c) 35D best mpg but lacking performance - could possible chip it

We are not yet at the buildout phase for the E70. That is when BMW loads the incentives (if necessary) to drop inventory levels. Currently the E92/E93 are in buildout, and have a $1500 lease credit to help things along.

The best deals are those negotiated with a dealer. I see you are in CA. You should contact Jon Shafer at BMW Santa Barbara, he is the founder of this website and a great CA!

The best lease deals are going to be on the 35i and 50i. The residuals are much stronger, although I would also run the numbers 35d to make sure as you do get a Eco Credit from BMW on the d.

What does lacking performance mean? Are you sure you are buying the right vehicle if you care about a little difference in straightline speed? I'm sure my 35D outperforms a 35i when towing my 6000 pound boat

How much X5 inventory is there. When I was buying one a couple of years ago, the local dealers had no new X5s the lot.

Bingo! BMW is a pretty smart company and I would expect them to start throttling back on the E70 production the closer we get to the SOP date to maintain healthy inventory levels. I would think the best deals are found at the end of the year when the remaining X5's will have sat on the dealer lots for a few months. However, your pickings regarding options. color etc might be slim at that point.

OP, I didn't understand your comment about the diesel lacking performance either. Care to elaborate?

I apologize, lacking performance is not correct. Out of the 3 X5's the diesel is the "slowest". Looks like 0-60 7.2 and 1/4 mile around 15.2 seconds.
Am I correct in thinking that the X5d does better once its moving (highway speeds) rather then off the line acceleration?

I don't plan on doing any pulling unless you consider a 5 year and newborn towing. This will be my vehicle for work/day care duty. Just need some get up and go for merging on to car pool and every once in a while pass a slow car.

^^ The 35i and 35d are different in how they respond. Top end, the 35i will have a 35d sucking its exhaust fumes. For passing/merging, the torque on the 35d is great. You think about a spot and you are there. If you are constantly going WOT and enjoying the rush to redline, then the 35i is for you. If you want effortless passing then the 35d is all yours.

Another thing to consider is the sound, some people just cannot get used to the sound of a diesel engine

The smell of diesel is also a problem for some too. Not me however, "I love the smell of (diesel) in the morning -- it smells like freedom!"

The best deals will be had, once the E70 is in buildout, which is expected to be around summer 13. I posted this in another thread:

It depends on a variety of things:

A) demand of particular vehicle
B) current inventory before new vehicle launch
C) economy health
D) how long has the successor been available

IMO there really isn't a lot of Finite conclusions, but with some research you can predict what type of incentives your looking at. If you can find out what the quantities values of each of the above then you can ball park the incentives or someone will mention their experience.

For example last year around this time, 2011 3 sedans (speciafically 328xi) were:
A) low demand since the f30 arrived for a while
B) high inventory
C) stable
D) e90 was EOP since October 2011

The incentives made some buyers get 9-11k off msrp.

If your leasing honestly its a tad bit different since the best time to lease a vehicle is in the middle of its model run. the deals would at the end, are best for those who purchase, rather than lease.

I don't know anything about incentives, but I did get an interesting email from my dealer today. It said something like they got a big allocation, and along with manufacturer incentives it's possible they can get customers with 2012 X5's into 2013 X5's for the exact same payment (lease or finance) they already have. They're having an event this weekend to get current customers to come in to check it out, giving out Williams Sonoma gift cards, etc.
