Wouldn't there be a safer way to check its functioning?

Such as, you in the other car pull off onto the shoulder, and have the X3 come by at the speed limit and brake sharply just after it passes you.

But then it's up to the X3 driver to time things so that there isn't someone anywhere in their rear view mirror.
Since I had to be in the other car to see what I expect to see, my wife had to drive the X3.
It was hard enough to convince her to SLAM the brakes full power

The safest way I thought would be to go on the highway late at night (a. no traffic, b. its dark so I can see better).
We grabbed the right lane, and made sure no one is behind us, then went for it.

Darn it - another bulb out!

This time it is the driver's side headlight for me. Easy find at least.

Won't be fun driving home tonight in the snow with 1 bulb out!
