2009 vs 2010 vs 2011 iDrive

Hi all.

First post here on the forums. I am looking into getting a CPO x5 35D, and am looking to know the difference between the 2009, 2010, and 2011 iDrive systems.

Can an 09 be upgrade to run BMW apps? What model year did this become stock, and are the previous years upgrade able via a software fix.

Also, any major platform/vehicle differences between the 09/10/11?

Looking to trade in my 2011 Explorer limited (what a maintenance mess).

Yes the iDrive can be retrofitted into a 2009 for about $3000 from sources outside of the USA. You would however loose all BMW Assist services.

So the 2010 and older is a safe bet on running apps?

No you need a 2011 or later and I think apps is a factory option.

2009 has the old idrive. 2010 got the new screen and software. 2011 got the combox where it displays album art from iPod etc.

This.

The '09 is horrendously bad in comparison to the new formats (father has an '09 X6).

The '10 iDrive was a huge step forward. The '10 is upgradeable, as far as the display is concerned. Dealer updated our '10 X5 for free so that it now shows the same display as our '11 750.

What did they upgrade?

All idrives can be upgraded to support apps.

09 will cost more to update than 10 or 11 as you have to replace more components.

A 10 or 11 would require a new combox and programming.

I am also looking at the BMW X5 CPO 35D CPO w/ the premium package, climate rear pkg, nav, and mileage less than 35k. I seen a loaded 2009 with all that and more but the mileage was really up there over (40k). My car was a victim (well, I am the victim) of the Sandy Hurricane in NYC.

The 2010(s) BMW x5 35d I've seen didn't have the Nav or the powerlift gate and I can't drop $40k for that??? I did however, (please don't scream) checked out the Audi Q7 TDI. I might be wrong but the features on that baby is sweet!!! It comes with the 3rd row and many of the features I mentioned (as standard). The price is similar and some a little low than the BMW.

Anyway, I am new here and learning as much as I can and why should i get the BMW X5 3dD over the Audi Q7 TDI.

'09 idrive is usable, and frankly pretty easy to navigate once you spend some time with it. Even better if you use voice commands or customizable buttons. Had several days of seat time in a 2013 X3 and didn't see anything in the idrive that I really envied except how quickly the backup camera came up when I started the car.

One nice thing about the earlier (CCC) idrive is that navigation map upgrades are $70 on ebay. Pop the map DVD in the drive and you're done.
