having to add a quart every 700 miles
2006 750 I have found myself having to add a quart every 700 miles. I have replaced the crankcase vent valves both where bad. I have also checked for leaks and none found. I am not seeing any smoke in the mornings at start up. I have also followed my wife and I dont see the car smoking going down the road.
I know its got to be going somewhere but I cant figure out where. Any ideas? |

It might be the head gasket seals. I had to get that done too. When they remove the cover under you car you might find all of the oil that you've been losing...

Well at least I am not alone on it. I have had the car on the lift and can find no oil leaking. It sucks I bought this car 2 mths ago and put a quart in it twice.
It's showing 9tmls on the oil service but I think I am going to change it this weekend and see if it helps. I wonder if the wrong type of oil could cause this? |

you probably have an oil leak; check your valve cover gaskets, timing cover gaskets, look in ur spark plug wells and see if there is any oil down there, check your oil pressure switch, your vacuum pump, your oil filter housing, the oil pan gaskets, oil level switch, and last but not least ur alternator bracket gasket.. i doubt your car is burning that much oil. I was nearly doing the same until I changed driver side VCG and spark plug tubes, and then more recently my oil pressure switch and vacuum pump O rings.

Your burning oil like the rest of us (bad valve seals) let it idle and see if it smokes! mine does

Valve seals. I'm at 92k with the same issue. Replacing mine over the winter. If your not mechanically inclined it will cost you $$$. It's not abnormal for these cars, although as a whole valve seals should last a bit longer.

I agree with others sounds like bad valve seals. Good Luck.

I have the same issue too. I've been using M series oil 10w 60. It works out better.

I was putting in a quart every 7-800 miles also.. Problem started to come to light at about 90,000 miles while car was under extended warranty. The dealer (A) did its best to ignore our concerns and then overstuffed the car with oil when we tried to get a true benchmark. To make a long story short, my husband got ill and passed away over the period of 18 moths and car concerns went on the back burner. Had an independent mechanic take care of car needs during this period and eventually he had me put in heavier weight oil for the last year which helped some...at his suggestion until I could contact BMW and get the repairs needed. He said he couldn't understand why a BMW flagship car should have the leakage at such low mileage and young age. I have now had the head gasket replaced, as well as some spark plug tubes and the 'snowman' is being watched by a local BMW dealership (B) (at least $3000) and I am sending the record and bill to BMW for reimbursement. Currently there are 138000 miles on the car and the driveway is full of old oil spots. I personally have not seen any leakage since the repair this past month, but it will be going back for another inspection the beginning of this month. Our previous 740iL (1995) had 369000 miles on it before it died with oil usage in the reasonable range and no burning. When we bought it it had about 30,000 miles on it. What gives?
