it's normal, doesn't plug into anything (people have speculated it is used for transport, to save settings, etc... makes sense). Get the battery registered.

pjpjr,
I was researching electrical information that i might need for my upcoming project to install a backup camera in my '06 325i and came across your post on "extra wire" on battery "negative". I did a mental log of it, to look for it when i disconnected my battery for the first time. I looked and looked, before i disconnected the NEGATIVE term...and couldn't see anything like what you mentioned. So, i disconnected the NEG lead and ...damn...if it didn't sort of "hang out there". I looked and looked for a "reconnect" terminal thinking it must of come loose when i took it off. But...then, I noted that, "IF IT HAD been connected to something, i certainly would have felt a "tug" when it disconnected. So... the "engineer" in me said that this extra wire must be a "power" connect to some portable TEST equipment that the BMW dealerships or builders must use to always have portable power for their TEST EQUIPMENT. I say this, because i noted that one lead tied directly to the BATTERY NEGATIVE ground lead i had taken off....and i suspect the other lead ties directly to the POSITIVE LEAD. SO..when i reassembled the electrical leads after completing my camera install, i just "tucked" the lead under the main NEG. LEAD so it wouldn't flop around.

No problem, just look in your manual.

Do NOT, under any circumstances, search Google, Bing, or use any other search engine or selection device for 330xi battery specification

Doing so could create feelings of inadequacy.

That is the connector for the BST (Battery Safety Terminal). When the vehicle is in a collision this component is designed to ignite a same charge to disconnect the positive battery terminal to prevent the frame of the car to become charged and risk a fire.

Just like the rear fog lights, this usually gets removed in the US market. Apparently America doesnt like safety...

Some extra details with pics

That isn't the BST terminal it is a transport connector to keep the cars charged during crossing the Atlantic.
BST looks nothing like that...
