I did replace the guide rails at 280,000 mi. along with the tensioner but the noise didn't change. No matter what happens at this point, I feel have got my moneys worth out of it.

Replace the tensioner. Its cheap, only takes 30 min, and might cure the noise. No special tools needed.

I waited to own a 530i for 31 years. All the way from the 2 E12's I either drove or rode in as a child/teenager until I fell in love with my final destination, my beautiful 530i E39
I could care less about the V8 cars. The original 5 series was and will always be a sexy six.

I couldn't go back to a six myself. That torque is too addicting.

Mine did the same, ran a couple cans of this through it and all was much better. http://www.berrymanproducts.com/prod...an-up-t-f-s-c/
Of course I did the air filter, oil change, and spark plugs first. Even did the VCGs and upper timing chain cover gaskets. Throw the CCV in for good measure. Still think the fuel system cleaner did the most towards smoothing the cold start. I figure the fuel injectors had crappy spray patterns which caused the cold start symptoms. |

But if I did, it would be a newer GTO or something in coupe trim.
