X5 x50i compared to a Yukon Denali XL

I was at our normal couples hangout tonight and the folks there had a 2013 Denali Yukon XL, 2007 Denali Yukon XL, 2013 Suburban XL and a 2010 Suburban XL. They were joking me how small my truck was compared to theirs...didnt bother me as I wasnt after sheer cargo volume when I bought my X5 - I wanted a drivers SUV and I got it.

My X5 gets slightly better MPG, has all maintenance included, more torque, is only 550lbs lighter and drives like a BMW. You guys run up against this much?

Apparently, the other 3 are overcompensating for having smaller than average ...er, um Assets!

People that have never owned trucks call the X5 a truck.

Yukon and Suburban = truck handling. I owned a Tahoe and a Suburban at separate times when I lived in the US, what a mistake. You can't polish a turd!

The X5 is a far better "car" (its not a truck) which is big enough for most things. Bigger is not better in all cases.

If anyone ever bragged to me about how much "bigger" their SUV was compared to my X5M, I would hit the "M" button LOL!

That may be precisely the case. I've never owned a truck and coming from a 550i M-Sport it feels like it could conquer so much more. It doesn't feel like a car, though.

It's not really a comparison. If we had 7 people in our family, we might also consider a Yukon XL or something similar. Otherwise the X5 is the perfect size. Also our friends don't buy American either.

Apples to oranges. The domestic iron mentioned are trucks. Built on a truck frame with a body bolted on -- lots of weight, but also lots of capability. They are intended as cargo and people haulers -- and they do that just fine thank you. They also start right up after leaving them in a snow covered airport parking lot for two weeks. If my old Tahoe got better gas mileage I would still be driving it -- great truck, incredible a/c system, and exceptional reliability and reasonable repair/maintenance costs with no part shortage problem. Nothing imported really compares to the capability of the XL/Suburban/Excursion/Expedition class IMHO.

Never ran into comments like that, but I think the appropriate response is simply, "Yes indeed, yours is much bigger."

Could be worse.
Was taking a ferry in Seattle several months ago. Forgot to disable motion sensor before going upstairs (the ride is 30 min). Heard the captain announce "Owner of BMW minivan, please turn off your alarm".
My first thought was "BMW makes minivans now?", then realization hit me.

Have a friend with Suburban.
Poor sap did not understand why I bought the X5. He would go on and on about what a bargain a suburtan is (the XL in his case).
I would say things like "I bought it because I needed an SUV, but had to have an SUV that can take a corner", "The suburban's suspension was cut out with an ax in Detroit".
His reply "I think my suburban takes corners just well, can give a run to many cars".

You lock the vehicle, then press the lock button on the key fob again. The red light stops blinking, but the alarm is engaged, minus the motion sensor. Useful if you have to leave a pet in the car for few minutes...

There have been several times when I have accidentally forgot to do this....with our 100 lb pup in the back. She is less than impressed when the alarm goes off.

I read this sometime back and realized just how true it is:

The answer to why you bought a BMW usually comes after driving another vehicle.

We own a 2007 Yukon Denali (not an XL) and a 2013 X5 3.5. Not exactly what Yatzhee wsas comparing, (XL vs X5) but the BMW and the Yukons are really very diffrent vehicles. To say the least, the X5 drives, handles, and rides much differently than the Yukon - that is, much better. The Yukon is a truck - it is bigger than an X5 and is made for towing. Standard equipment incliud es a tow package and a transmission setting for towing. It has 380 horsepower and because of it's weight and its 4-speed auto gets about 14mpg city, maybe 19 highway *not towing). The third row, which is standard, seats 3. It has a soft ride - not as bad as an escalade but with the Michelins doesn't really feel too truck like. It also has lousy headlights - can barely see at night - and to change to better bulbs requires removing a fender guard. In bright daylight the speedometer is impossible to see. The interior is leather with fake wood and a non-heated steering wheel. This vehicle is used for long trips (until I got the X5) but really to pull a horse trailer. As far as comparing it with the BMW free maintenance (which I suspect is built into the price of all BMWs), so far at 75000 miles we have had oil changes and tire rotations in the Denali but I don't know what the next servicing will be.
The BMW is infinitely more refined, the seats are better (multi-contour), drives and handles well despite its bulk, gets better gas mileage, and is a bit smaller. I would drive the Yukon in the snow rather than the BMW - mainly because if some idiot smacks into me Id rather the vehicle with 75000 miles gets hit than a new one!
One more thing - Yukon has not squeaks or rattles, BMW has temperature related rattles/squeaks.
