Thank you for this thread, very nice info.
I went ahead and did this same thing to my e46 330xi and I have too much vacuum being created in the valve cover area, I can hardly remove the oil fill cap and I have valve cover gasket leaks developing. I installed the PCV valve so that the intake can pull as much air as it wants, I was under the impression that this was the correct way to install it. I believe that you are using this valve to actually limit the amount of air the intake can pull through the valve cover. If so, I have the valve backwards. Can someone confirm? |

Are you using the same threaded PCV as I am? The threaded portion should be pointed towards the intake.

Hmmmm....I thought I had too much vacuum at one point because my hoses started pinching but I was using heater line hoses which were the wrong type. I used beefy fuel line hoses made by Gates instead, purchased from Napa:

Also shake the PCV vale. It should rattle when you shake it, that metal piece on the inside should look off center through the hole.

The valve shakes and is new, I can blow one way through it freely and the other way is much reduced.
Should it be installed to reduce vacuum at the valve cover side or installed to allow free vacuum from the intake to the valve cover? Right now I am having difficulty removing the oil filler cap with the car running, it is far too much vacuum, which makes me think the PCV valve should be restricting vacuum to the valve cover, not allowing it. Thank you for your help! |

Yep- just did some research, pretty certain I have this backwards, basically an unrestricted loop from the intake to the valve cover.

Noticing something as cold weather hit's around here--the PVC valve needs to be cleaned from time to time--I think the cold has something to do with more build up--I spray throttlebody cleaner trough the PVC while the car idle's--quick way to clean it out--

I reversed the PCV valve and things seem better now. If I leave it at idle for a few minutes and then remove the oil fill cap some pressure does release, are you having the same thing occur? Vacuum present in the valve cover?

I misspoke, I should have said when I remove the oil fill cap I have a vacuum release- the valve cover is under negative pressure not positive.

Just took a drive, oil is blowing out of the valve cover on the side and front of the engine.

Time for a new valve cover gasket. Cheap and quick replacement.

Took the valve cover off, gasket was like plastic. I will reassemble tomorrow and try again, I still am leary of the amount of vacuum that is being applied to the valve cover/engine, maybe I will try another PCV valve, that matches the one posted here.

So...
I have read this thread several times and think this is a great idea! My question is... What is the exact routing of the hoses? I see that the line coming off of the front of the valve cover goes into the bottom inlet on the catch can, then the top line (which contains the PCV) goes down and under the intake... but what does it connect to? Are these the only two lines? I know that the dipstick vacuum port needs to be plugged, but does anything else need to be capped/plugged? I am ready to go to town to get the needed parts, just wanting to know the exact line routing setup to ensure that I have everything that I need. Thanks so much... |

This is not my video- but it is the same vacuum that I am seeing in my valve cover upon release of the filler cap.

dump ! Why not to use the best of OE BMW CCV and just implement what was suggested by our GURU CNN long time ago THIS : If the Intake Manifold sits above the Valve Cover, then the design is simple. Reuse OE CCV + implement CNN suggestion to have Manifold above the Valve Cover by another connector from Valve Cover to Manifold You will have the best of both , - no oil coming into CCV due to U-turn and right vacuum pressure designed by BMW ! I would first try this SIMPLE solution before anything else !!
