New tranny or not?
I have about 152k on my car now and having some transmission problems. My forward clutch drum is damaged, and I pulled the codes off my car which are p0720 & p0731. I got quoted me at $2800 to rebuild my one now, but would it be better to go with a different one and get it put in?

It was right around $3,000 to get mine replaced, and it was a 62k mile tranny. My tranny was too destroyed to rebuild. I'm guessing that the costs won't be that much different. I would go with whichever one you could get the better warranty on.

$2800 w/core here too, my old unit was trash.
IMO try to find a 2yr/24k warranty

Thanks. I'm going to another shop 2moro to see what they say about my car and get another quote. But I don't want to pay $2800 to run into another problem. So basically what I'm asking is if its better to order one that is already been done and tested over fixing the one I have now.

Correct me if I'm wrong here: fix the tranny with new part would almost be like having a brand new tranny? So should that out last a used tranny?

well, there's really no such thing as a "BRAND NEW" trans anymore.
They're all REMANUFACTURED, either performed by the manufacturer (best) or by a 3rd party transmission specialist. The manufacturer who produced the trans for the e39 stopped producing these transmissions right at - or shortly after - the time BMW stopped making e39's. And imo, I'd get a remanufactured transmission ready to install instead of having a shop rebuild it. Businesses that do nothing except remanufacture transmissions have better quality control and better test methods than an independent garage that's going to tear it down and put it back together in the corner of their shop.

I just had my GM trans rebuilt for 3k at a local trans shop. It includes a 2 yr warranty.

Probably doesn't help, but I had a '97 that lost reverse having 284k on it. I looks for a tranny or parts at on Craigslist with some luck. Somehow a guy found me and he was selling a '98 with 140k and nothing wrong with it for $2600. Lets say that I now have a parts car for the newer one
. I'm with the other guys.
