Blackie D Evolving

Sent the ECU off to VS Motorsports for an Evolve Tune today. I hope to get it back on Wednesday.

I love it when I get a car good enough to have a name. So far I have Whitey (e28 535i BMWCCA club race car) and Blackie (e28 M5), and now the 335d is Blackie D and it's good enough to be named after my old M5. I still have the body of a BMW named Silver, but it's soul has departed (totaled by one of my kids).

My cars often get names from them becoming annoying to me. I call my BMW Sourkraut.

It turns out I will not be geting an Evolve Tune as soon as I expected. VS Motorsports is closing it's doors. ECU is being sent back to me, untuned, tomorrow.

Mach V in Sterling VA is now an Evolve dealer. Call Dan and make arrangements to send him your ECU.

I will as soon as I get the ECU back and get back from skiing. Evolve made it sound like Mach V isn't totally set up yet, but I'll call anyway. Having to drive the old M5, which isn't so bad.

Wow. So they're going out of business? Anyone know the details behind this?

I would start inquiring FAST where the ECU is. If the company went bankrupt, it could be prohibited shipping off anything. Good luck!

Have you considered RennTech in Florida?

That is option #1, but much more expensive than Evolve. Will call tomorrow. I don't think Evolve has anyone fully set up to replace VS Motorsport.

I wound up buying a JBD + CAN tool for $329 + $32.00 shipping. I simply couldn't make myself spend twice the cost of the Evolve tune to go with RENNtech, so instead spent 1/2 the cost of an Evolve tune to go with JBD. When Evolve gets someone (probably Mach V) set up and functioning, I may again consider their tune. Evolve + JBD is still hundreds cheaper than RENNtech.

I don't blame you, Renntech always has seemed overly proud of their products.

Dan from Mach V says they are now up and running on Evolve Tunes. I cancelled the JBD and am sending the ECU to Mach V tomorrow. I may be the guinnea pig for them. $799 plus shipping.

Evolve Update:
Dan at Mach V reports that the side of the motherboard that they must access is bonded to a large aluminum heatsink. Apparently this is not the case on pre 2011 Ds. He is working with Evolve on how to go about removing the heatsink without damaging the motherboard. I may have to go the JBD route afterall.

To those interested I have the RENNtech flash, to get to the motherboard is NOT easy I happened to take my ECU for the flash and saw how LENNY at RENNtech did the job its by far not for the mediocre guy and its very delicate and has to be a person KNOWLEADGEABLE on this, it is not for the mild mechanic. Anyway, they do a great job in opening it and when they close it up they make sure it is SPOTLESS remember if the BMW finds out your ECU has any marks on the ECU it will void ANYTHING that is why LENNY took a long time to do everything and cleaning and putting ECU to OEM specs was a must. I do encourage ANYONE to see this process and then speak. JBD although excellent for the dollar I beleive cannot be be compared to RENNtech or any other flash outthere, that said, go for what you desire. I am speaking on my behalf since I have used their product for over 9 years and only once on my 02 MCS did I lose my Flash and that was when I came to Puerto Rico and lost it dont ask me why , but RENNtech reflashed it for me. the last time I dynoed the MINI was back in 2008 or 09 and got 197 whp and I had over 100k on it. What can I say?

Another Evolve update:
Imran confirmed that some small number of ECUs are made with the flash port on the heatsink side of the motherboard. In the UK, Evolve will not attempt seperation of the motherboard from the heatsink to access the port if this is the case. The risk of damaging the motherboard is too great and the cost of replacement exceeds $1000. They send it back with a sorry note. Dan, at Mach V, thinks he can get the motherboard seperated from the sink and I agreed to let him try. No word yet on how that is going.

Yet another Evolve update:
Dan, from Mach V, called to say they successfully separated the motherboard from the heatsink and will be flashing the ECU tomorrow. I may have it back Friday.

Mach V Evolve Tuner

This is great. I had contacted Dan many months back when I found out he was to be a newly minted Evolve tuner, but for many reasons haven't done anything about it. So you must be his first 335d Evolve tune customer? Will be great to see how it works. Are you still in warranty/maintenance or out? Sterling is only an hour or so drive for me.
