M Sport OEM Run-Flat Tires - what did your X1 come with?

There seem to be just two OEM tires that are delivered on M Sports in the US. I've read that the Pirelli Cinturato P7 Run Flat are a bit more inspiring than the low rolling resistance Goodyear Efficient Grip RunOnFlat. Now that A/S tires are an option, any reports on what tire is being provided?

Please comment on your impressions of the OEM tires.

The Goodyears haven't impressed me at all, but then I didn't expect much since I don't like runflats. I almost didn't buy the car because of the tires. Come springtime, I might not even mount them when the winters come off. I'll probably store them to put back on at trade-in, and go with a conventional/non-rft performance tire.

Any M Sport owners wish to chime in?

After reading the F30 forums, consensus seems to rate the RFTs in this order:

1. Bridgestone Potenza S001 RFT
2. Pirelli Cinturato P7 Run Flat
3. Goodyear Efficient Grip RunOnFlat

I wouldn't be surprised if BMW has seen the err of their ways (like with the paddle shift fiasco) and have stopped putting Goodyear's on M Sports, making the Pirellis the default M Sport summer tire. Perhaps we'll even see the Bridgestones soon since they are offered on F30 M Sports.

Hopefully, Tire Rack performs another road test that includes the newer Bridgestone and Goodyear. I have a feeling that Michelin is still king of the hill.

Z4Dennis, did you get A/S tires with your M-Sport. What tires were they? Are the wheels still staggered?

Hi Guys, new to the forum. My 2011 X1 M Sport came with 18 inch Pirelli's but 225/45 for front and 255/40 for rear (from memory, but definitely different profile). They grip fine for summer tyres in summer conditions but aree noisy. Mine is a UK 2.0 130 kw disel engine and the engine noise could not drown out the road noise on motorways (your US freeways).
Now I am hunting high and low for run-on-flats winter tyres with 68db or less noise on 225/50 17 inch to experiment. Found only one in UK websites Dumlop Winter SP3 run on flats but dealers seem only to stock this one non-run-flat. Boo. Any UK forum members have ideas ?

Mine came with Goodyears and couldn't be more displeased. They'll be off within a month in favor of Michelin Pilot Sport A/S on some kind of 5-spoke rims. Maybe these...

I have my 2013 M Sport now, ordered at the end of November.

I ended up with the All-Season tires option (which supposedly wasn't a choice yet): 18" Pirelli Cinturato P7 All-Season Run Flat (different tire than the Summer Pirelli Cinturato P7 Run Flat).

The wheels are non-staggered, so 225/45 all around (just like on the F30 M-Sport all-seasons). This likely means I don't have the increased top speed limiter (not a big deal as I should never be driving this baby hauler that fast).

Ride is very comfortable (especially for run-flats), but grip is a lacking a bit compared to the performance summer tires I'm used to.

The square setup should reduce understeer vs the staggered. I plan to remove the run-flats once they wear. I'd like get a bit more rubber and fit 235/45s. Plan is to fit Michelin Pilot Super Sports (best tire I have ever owned...transformed my E90 335i) and keep a donut in the boot.

I was so unsatisfied with the P7 All-Seasons that I headed back to the dealer Monday. They corrected the problem and replaced the wheels and tires with the proper staggered wheels and Summer P7s. Oh, what a difference...night and day!

The confidence in cornering I had when test driving has returned. I've also noticed an improvement in braking (as suspected). Understeer has not been a problem. I don't plan to test the handling limits any more extremely than I have so far, so understeer is no longer a concern of mine.

I am happy enough with the Summer P7s that I will not get rid of the runflats. I also don't want to give up cargo space for the donut.

In my opinion, it is better to run Summer tires and get a separate set of winter tires if your climate dictates it. The all-seasons are a compromise in every sense of the word.

wait, you didn't like your tires so they just swapped them out?? wish i would have thought of that! wonder if it's too late to try with 1600 miles on the car... would love to swap the Goodyears for the P7s

The square wheels and all-season tires were not what should have been ordered. They swapped the wheels w/tires...I didn't get brand new tires exactly as they had likely been test driven a few miles. They will likely sell a M Sport with the all-seasons and no-paddles to someone who doesn't care (or know any better).

A Goodyear for P7 swap might have worked before you drove your car off of the lot only if they had an M Sport sitting on the lot with P7s. I believe BMW has abandoned the Goodyears and the Pirellis are standard now.

I just looked at the prices of the summer Pirelli P7s and the Bridgestone S001 runflats...outrageous! Michelin Pilot Super Sports are much less expensive. The wife and I may have to figure out a way to make things work with the donut. Good thing I have the 128i donut to experiment with.

Wear them out and get some Super Sports!

In these cold temps, the X1 reported low pressure indicators on all four tires.

Since I wanted to inflate them as close to max pressure for better crisper handling and mileage, I finally got down to read the details:

Pirelli P-Zero
225/40 R19 89W
Max Pressure 51 (I set mine to 45psi front and 48psi rear)
Treadwear 225, Traction AA, Temp A

This is an M Sport X1 picked up on ED.

These perform great on dry pavement, but horribly in my first snow the other day. I skidded 70-feet past my driveway!! I felt like I had skis on versus tires.

I need some good snows for this car - any recommendations?

I think while your ease of steering increases, your grip will decrease with high air pressure. I've never set any tires that high. Lower PSI will give your more grip. Take a look at the recommended pressures on your door panel and adjust from there.

I've never driven in snow but I am a believer that Michelin makes the best tires these days.

I mounted 17" Michelin Pilot Alpin PA3's on my M Sport (non-runflat). My goal was to improve winter traction without sacrificing too much dry weather performance. Well, goal accomplished ... and then some. The tires offer very good dry grip, and they're more comfortable than the stock Goodyears. But more impressive is just how amazing the tires have been in the snow. I expected them to be better than all-seasons, but not this much better.

Our X1 35i had the staggered wheels with the 18" Goodyear Efficient Grip RunOnFlat tires. They are 'summer grand touring tires' so I didnt expect much from them in the snow. But we got whacked with a snow storm and a lot of ice a few days ago and it handled it it pretty well. Better than I thought it would, I really didnt want summer tires or the staggered wheels, didnt say anything about summer tires or the 'free' optional wheels on the window sticker so I just assumed there were all season.

They are a bit noisy on rough pavement, overall the ride is OK though and I'm not going to run out and replace them for a while. I havent found any all season run flats in the 225/255 18" size tire so the Goodyear run flats are staying for a while I guess, unless I run across a set of standard wheel/tires.

I went with the Michelin X-Ice Xi3 on 17" rims on my M-Sport. The handling has been phenomenal on ice and snow. I was recently in Mammoth and was able to thoroughly test them out on some wide empty roads. They really made for some fun sporty driving on the snow. Sometimes when I thought the X1 would loose grip and skid, the tires held their ground. They also have great acceleration and stopping ability. On dry pavement they are smoother quieter than expected although you do loose some road feel. When winter is over I will be looking for non RFTs performance tires to replace the stock Pirelli Cinturatu P7's (I can't stand them).

Wife's new 2013 X1 3.5 M-sport came with the Pirelli 18s but how can i tell whether they are summer performance or A/S. (Eyesight is not so good, so need to know what to look for.) Drove it in the freezing rain this morning and they were rock solid, but I was not doing any too crazy.
