E39 (1997 - 2003)
The BMW 5-Series (E39 chassis) was introduced in the United States as a 1997 model year car and lasted until the 2004 when the E60 chassis was released. The United States saw several variations including the 525i, 528i, 530i and 540i. -- View the E39 Wiki |

528iT transmission choices?
Hi, I'm in the market for a 528iT and was wondering whether anyone can confirm the Transmissions offered on that model, 1999-2000 in US.
Was the same manual offered in both years? Which package or model year Automatic was Steptronic (manual shifting option)? Are any of them equipped with a limited slip diff? thanks. |

5 speed manual transmission, both years.
4 speed automatic w/ ATC, both years. 5 speed steptronic was standard on the 540iT, both years. The only E39 that has LSD is the M5, doesn't matter if it's a 525, 528, 530, 540, stick or auto all non-M E39's has open diffs.

My mistake. Starting with 9/1999 production date the 4 speed automatic was replaced with the 5 speed steptronic automatic.
