Question Audio upgrade

Does anyone have experiece with upgrading the sound system in an X5 with the premium audio? I am thinking about adding a Focal subwoofer with an additional amp +/- changing some of the stock speakers (had a focal sub with K2 speakers in the rear and audison amps in my old X5 and the sound quality was leaps and bounds superior to the stock system (and the vast majority of other installed systems I have heard). Worried about the installers messing up the fiberoptic system in the new X5.

I was eyeballing the JL Audio Stealthbox that mounts discretely in the rear cargo area...with plenty of room for another amp.

I know. Saw that. The box is perfect. I had a fantastic experience with the Focal subwoofer in the past and am told that it has a "cleaner" sound. Will look at both carefully. Thanks for the follow up post.

are you guys talking about this mod:

http://www.jlaudio.com/sms-b-x5e70-l...ealthmod-94518

at least it seems that would not require door panel removal, which is a good thing. Pricey but seems well integrated. I wonder if you retain all bmw control like equalizer on the idrive.

I think I have the base radio in my X5 although it does have a technology package?? If it is a base system then in my opinion it sounds good enough. I guess my question would be what is there to gain by adding stuff to it?

The Stealthbox just adds more bass if you so desire...in which I do! Lol

I was looking at the stealthbox also but i have a third row seat. So I can't get that. I think I will get the earthquake sws-8xi which will replace the speakers under the front seats and have an amp powering those.

I am looking into the JL Audio upgrade,

Can anybody send me a picture of their Combox in the rear left trunk storage ? I would like to know if that box is taking additional space than what I have so that I know what space I have for my stereo upgrade

I am thinking about these:

I built a custom sub box for the X, doesn't take up much room , 2 10" Memphis subs, 500watt amp. Sounds better than the B&O system.

I didn't go nuts with the design, kept it basic. I took the panels out and traced them for accurate fit. Click image for larger version

The plan was to wrap it in black, but the wife wanted "LV" .. I hate it, but being she drives it more than me, so be it. After all, a happy wife is a happy home .

It matched well in the tobacco interior. Will take a few shots of box in truck and post.

bandit, can you comment a bit on the parts you ended up using ?

I mean you added a sub and an amp, that's it ?

Did you change any of the factory doors speakers ? or you felt the amplifier and sub were the only weak points of the factory system ?

I'd really prefer not to remove the door panels, and avoid any future rattles.

For me the premium sound has great highs to mid. Decent bass, and crisp at low levels. But yes, for me that was the weak part. I felt it was not "hitting" and was a little distorted at mid to high volume. And the bass seems to hit different depending where your sitting. I did nothing to existing speakers as I felt they were great. The only panel I took off was in the cargo space to trace shape of box and to tap into existing speaker for the line output converter to get a signal for the amp. That was the best part of wiring the system, no wires were ran towards front of truck.

2 10" subs (Memphis)
500 watt amp (kicker)
Line output converter

glad to hear your answer, that would mean that the JL audio product would fit the bill for me.

They will bring me better bass, new amp, and new tweeter but I can install those without having to remove the door panel so why not.
I'll keep you guys posted when I am done with this little project

X5 Premium Speaker Upgrade

I just upgraded 14 of the 16 speakers, not the subs, in my 2013 X5 Premium Sound System and am very pleased with the results. I got the speakers from bavariansoundwerks.com . I had used them a couple of years ago to upgrade the speakers in my wife's 3 conv and loved the speakers, customer support, and the resultant sound improvement, so I tried them once again for the X5...what a difference. All of the cheapo original mid's and tweeters were replaced with very high quality plug-and-play quality sound reproducers. I did take the door panels off, bav soundwerks provides very good instructions and a wonderful tool kit that assists in the access. Each speaker fits perfectly and after about 30-40 hours of break-in sounded marvelous. The entire system upgrade was a little over a $1000, but well worth it.

I see you can buy the individual line of speakers from bmw
http://parts.bmwofsouthatlanta.com/s...tring=speakers

i wonder if they are better than the BSW ...

the basic speaker from bmw are 3 times less expensive than the individual line...
http://parts.bmwofsouthatlanta.com/s...20door%20front

hopefully there is something to it.

anybody heard the bmw individual setup ?

Are you still loving your bavsound upgrade?

I'm considering doing the 14 speaker upgrade on my 2012 X5.

Doesn't it seem like an upgrade of the X5's audio deserves an upgrade for the low frequencies as well? The mid-range speakers in the doors and pillars are tiny! Smallest I've seen in recent history. What are they, 3"??

And I've not seen what the underseat subwoofer speakers look like but do they even have some kind of resonate box? Pretty sketchy.

Maybe a great combo would be the bavsound 14 speaker upgrade plus the JLAudio X5 subwoofer?

It sounds like the wiring for the sub is not too bad? Plenty of room for sub and amp in the rear tire floor compartment and sidewall compartments. Is there enough high current power and an appropriate subwoofer signal already present in the rear area? Optimal would be if there was enough power plus a sub signal in the side compartment allowing the sub amp to be easily installed there.

Thanks

Just a word of warning on those stealth boxes. In my experience (friends who have had them) they are great at first but over time the box's case itself loosens causing rattles. This can be solved with something like dynamat but it's something to consider.

I think the speakers were well worth the time, effort and money. I went by the BMW dealer last week and did a sound comparison on a similar audio system in a new car and the difference was more than I had thought...granted the new one hadn't had any break in time for the system, but after seeing the speakers that came out of mine I don't think a break in period would help much. I would like to upgrade the subs sometime, just to get a little more musicality and tonal balance from them...they are a bit boomy and punchy, but I have somewhat toned that down. I did put some dynamat in the doors and panels that I took off and I think that helped some in the resonance control. I have a professional audio analyzer and used it both before and after my upgrade and it shows that I have a much smoother balanced blend of frequencies...but most important, it just sounds better. I really think what the system needs is a really good mid bass, but that would require mods that I can put off for a while. I think if you decide to upgrade the 14, you will be pretty pleased with the results. If you do go with the bavsoundwerks...get the tool kit, its everything you need in a handy case.

the cool think with the BSW speaker is that they are a match for the OEM amp...
the bad thing is that you are still using the OEM amp... and new amp would be first step toward more clarity and power...

I have been trying to find some good example of audio upgrade, but there are not many speakers fitting the oem size. So far Morel speakers Hybrid and Hybrid integra seems to be the best fit for tweeter and midrange.
Unfortunately nobody produces good under seat woofers. The only fit are the Earthquake sound SW8.

I think you are right about the amp, a really high quality one would make a ton of difference...here comes the BUT...I had a 2003 Range Rover that I went through and really did a high end upgrade to the sound system and it really sounded great. The big problem was that somehow the electronics in the car kept rejecting the amps and it kept throwing everything off line. Granted, it was a Range Rover, but RRUSA had never seen a problem like this...so I suspected that it was my tampering that threw everything off. BMW electronics can be temperamental too, so I hesitate to mess around with it too much. Other speakers would probably have sound a little better, but after having seen how the original speakers were mounted and installed...I certainly appreciate "plug-and-play". Installation was still a level 9 task, but doable.

I don't have a service manual for the X5 yet so its hard to guess how the stock AV deck, amp, and speakers are wired. Is the stock amp for all channels located in the rear left side compartment? All channels wired from the AV deck back to that point and then all speakers distributed from there? Is it a 7 channel amp (L/R front doors, L/R rear doors, center, L/R rear pillars)? Any idea what the wattage is per channel?

How are the subs powered? do they have their own separate amp located near them?

Replacing the main amp could be relatively easy, except that it probably doesn't have enough power delivery from the battery to install a nice amp upgrade. And I feel very nervous running the typical massive 4 gauge power cable up to the already overtaxed BMW battery. That battery is already probably the #1 source of problems I've read about online and my BMW dealer even warned me that its a bit marginal and future models may go to 2 batteries!

The same worry applies to adding a 500W subwoofer amp. How do I power it? Has anyone researched the existing power cabling to the rear area?

Does anyone have the JL Audio subwoofer installed? I'd love to read a description of the install method and see some photos. I've never put a subwoofer inside a covered area such as the rear floor tire storage area. I'm not willing to cut a hole in the floor so it would need to operate in that enclosed compartment. But that seems like a bad idea. Doesn't it sound boomy/too resonate in there and even vibrate and cause the floor cover to bounce around?

By the way, I inquired at bavsound if they have anything other than their "stage 1" upgrade which is just a replacement of the 14 factory speakers. They said they are working on stage 2 that involves replacement of the underseat subwoofers. No info provided on when it will be available or what it will look like.

Wow Philooo, you ROCK! That information is awesome.

What is that from and where did you get it? Is it from a PDF of the entire detailed X5 service manual?

I will now spend hours reading and absorbing it all.

Thank you!
