You should reset adaptations as well via INPA. Too many people don't do this step.

I just haven't had the nerve to risk my transmission computer and tried upgrading it, lol. It would be easier to risk if I had a backup car to drive just in case. |

First, are you familiar with what INPA is?
Basically these transmission can/will adapt to the oil that is in them, driving style, etc. Changing a significant amount of the fluid changes the fluid properties faster than the computer is designed to adjust to. The transmission computer memory "adaptations" can be reset back to original settings where it can re-learn how to change gears based on the new fluid properties. On mine in particular when I changed the fluid the first time I had some pretty bad jerking/bucking in 5th gear after doing it--I thought my transmission was a goner. I reset the adaptations with INPA and it fixed itself for the time being. I had to replace some solenoids a few weeks later, but that was a separate issue. I have read in a few places that people not resetting adaptations after changing fluid is thought to be a common reason people think these transmissions fail after a fluid change. I have also read that there is a way to reset the adaptations by holding the accelerator on the floor for 30 seconds with ignition at on (engine off). Personally this never did squat for me, so I would recommend you not go this route. |

I just got a 2010 528xi two days ago and I am experiencing that slight shutter while coming to a stop, the car is still under warranty so maybe I will check to see if there is a software update that I need for my car. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks to those posting on the forum

So I went to my shop today to check out for leaks and the Adapter where the o-ring are and all he found was that the tranny pan had a little leak but nothing Critical or Severe where I had to change it ? The problem is still there after i left the shop. My next step is to try the Software update? If anyone got a better idea I'm all ears, I can't take this jerking when coming to a stop anymore. Thanks for everyone time here. John

I believe it was previously stated that u may just need to fill to optimum levels then reset adaptions

Both are cheap/easy to do, so I would recommend trying them.

The 545i drives like a dream except for the occasional back an forth shifts between 5th - 6th and the delay when selecting reverse. I rarely drive between 35-40 mph, so the shifting is not a big issue for me. But if $400 in solenoids will fix the problem, I will get it taken care of. My mechanic just told me he could reset the adaptations after the swap. Thanks for all the relevant information you have provided.

lol, I'm pretty sure he said for a fee and not free. All in all I call him today and talk to him on the phone and seem to be a very nice guy. I'm meeting up with him tomorrow morning at his job so he can check the car out for me and hoping it will be fixed. Keeping my fingers cross.

The mechatronics sleeve seal failing will be visible from outside the transmission Last edited by schpenxel; 01-29-2013 at 07:19 PM. |

This morning i had my car on the lift and was able to take the adapter out without taking the pan or valve body off. The adapter was dry and there was nothing showing that it was wet on it? so i dont think it was leaking.

Well, then start learning what mechatronik adapter is, mechatronik sleeve is not removable without dropping the pan bc it has a clip you have to pull down in order to release the sleeve!!! Mechatronik adapter is between valve body and tranny pump. So what did you take out??? A connector I guess?? Go to realoem and start learning, it's never too late I'll give you a 1000$ if you remove adapter without dropping the valve body Last edited by SFbay; 01-29-2013 at 09:53 PM. |

Electrical connector [to the trans] can be disconnected without dropping the pan. I think this is what JOHNNY2271 is saying.
Sleeve is attached to the body of trans and can only be removed after pulling on the clip AFTER dropping the pan. Electrical connector plugs in the sleeve from outside the pan. Adapter is entirely different. [some] people are mixing the words Electrical connector, sleeve, adapter. |

It just might be in pieces. For anyone reading this in the future, let's get this straight: Below is the mechatronics seal adapter. It goes between the oil pump and valve body. It cannot be seen without completely removing the mechatronics/valve assembly. It does not commonly fail, and you will not lose any fluid if it does, but your transmission will do weird things (at best). It should be replaced any time the valve body is removed from the transmission, as even a small leak here can have huge consequences. ![]() Now, below is the mechatronics SLEEVE that everyone has trouble with (old and new, seals have changed). This can be seen outside of the transmission when the wiring harness is removed. It keeps fluid in the transmission while letting the electrical connectors through. The second picture is where it actually ends up in the car (valve body/mechatronics is removed obviously). Third is how it looks with electrical connector still connected ![]() ![]()
