Standard Air Filter and Code reset

So my radio stopped working on 2008 328i and i took it in to have it diagnosed. And when i did the dealer said it was 85$ to diagnose the problem and said that i also need to replace my air filter and need to reset my code (for maintence schedule).

He said to replace the air filter that it would be 125$ + to reset the code another 64$. Is that normal? I have about 43k miles on my car.

Also could i get this done somewhere other than at a BMW dealership?

Air filter replacement is a simple DIY, and you can re-set the service interval display yourself. There are loads of 'how-to' guides on YouTube.

I can't remember how much a replacement air filter was on my 330i but no where near that price I also think the reset the clock "code as they call it" can be done via the OBC or idrive depending on the system you have. Yes, the air filter is kinda a PITA to replace in its location. The $85 to have them just hook the car up to the computer and see the code for the radio issue sounds about right.


It might be time to find a indy BMW repair place now that the warranty is up on your car I would assume.

My dealer charges about $140 to change the A/C Microfilter and $50 (perhaps less) for the engine air filter. Both can be bought off of Amazon or other websites for considerably less money and install easily yourself. The A/C microfilter is a 5 minute job, the engine air filter perhaps 15-20 minutes. I wouldn't let the dealer change any of these unless they do it for free under the maintenance plan.

Again, both filters can be bought for $20-$30 each online. These are just easy money makers for the dealer to keep the Starbucks flowing...

Filters are about 25 to 35 mann filters are used commonly.
You will need a T20 or T25 driver for the engine air filter most
already have a metric socket set.

You can do the job yourself and reset the CBS recall yourself.

I would be doing them every 30k and if you and checking the Engine air every 15k.
If you are in an extremely dirty environment every 15k.

All the CBS recalls can be reset from the one of the levers on the steering wheel takes less than a minute probably 30 seconds
when you familiar with the procedure.

Do you know which stereo system you have is it Hi Fi , L7 or stereo.

If they want to replace and amplifier, you might want to consider and aftermarket solution
because it will be way to expensive for what you get.
