The one that I have heard most about is carsoft. However, even it is limited in what it can reveal since our cars are OBDI. On OBDII, it can give live readouts on lots of data points.
Also, our DME's are not "tuneable" in the sense of hooking something up and making tuning changes. I have read about a WAR chip that supposedly has a lot more tuning capabilities. Perhaps you can google it and get some good info. There are some good performance chips out there that give 15 or so extra HP, but that's pretty much it. Basically, our beloved M50's are pretty much what they are as far as performance goes unless you go forced induction and that's not cheap by any means.

Aftermarket chip for "tuning" Peake research code reader or stomp test for diagnostics. Ahhhh the simplicity of OBD1

As far as extracting more useful information than is possible with the Peake tool, there are many users that have put together a clone of the BMW GT1 diagnostic system or purchased one outright from Asian sellers on Ebay. I you want to roll your own, you better have some decent computer skills and be somewhat familiar with both Windows and Linux. If you are not deep into computers, you can buy a turn key system if you look on Ebay. The GT1 is not really user friendly and you will have to spend time learning how to use it. It is the most powerful software available for diagnosing and monitoring our OBD I engines. Look on the diagnostics subforum of another forum for our cars and you will find lots of information. |
