How to lock boot / Trunk ?!

Hi Guys.

New to this forum so apologies if im posting in wrong section ect.

Recently bought a 2004 745li and having a few problems but heres one of them.

If i unlock the boot in the centre console I can open the boot using the key fob and the button on the boot lid, problem is when i lock the car the boot doesnt lock so anyone on the street can open it by pressing the button. Is this normal? Are you expected to remember to hit the lock switch in centre console?

To lock the trunk, move the switch in the console to the "locked" position, close the console cover and lock it using the metal key in the remote. The trunk cannot be opened by pressing any buttons including the one on the remote.

Hi George,

Cheers for the reply. I've got as far as you've explained, still baffles me a little.

For example you go to the shops and want to use the trunk so you have to use the key in order to make sure its locked. Why does it not lock with the car? Seems the convenience of having a "key less" entry boot is lost as you need to permanently leave boot unlocked.

Can I program my key to lock the boot as well as car? I work for Jaguar/Rangerover and when the car is locked you cannot gain entry to the boot.

Am I being a massive idiot here?!

To understand this correctly, you hit the lock button on the fob, all doors lock but if you were to walk up to the trunk and manually hold the button down (which is located on the trunk) it opens?

Spot on.

This is if the switch in the centre console is switched to unlock.
When the switch in centre console is set to lock, I can only open the boot by removing the key from the fob and inserting into lock.

Is this normal?

Yes its normal. if there was an electronics failure, you need to get into trunk manually....

But if you lock center console switch, and lock the center console, here in California, it is locked to AVOID being searched by police without warrant or probable cause.

It should not open with keyless system while switch is set to lock, or the trunk button by steering wheel or FOB . but metal key? yes

I don't think the trunk should open if you've just locked all the doors with the fob especially if the center console switch is in the UNLOCK position. My switch is in the UNLOCK position all the time. I am going to try this on my car. I think Gene might be on to something though. Do you have comfort access? Standing close with the key in your pocket may unlock it, same behavior should occur with your door locks.

Ok I tried this...made sure my center console switch was in the UNLOCK position, locked all the doors, walked to the trunk and tried to open it manually.. Didn't open as I expected.
I don't have the Comfort Access option, maybe if I did and standing so close the trunk it might have unlocked and opened when I did it manually, and I would assume same for the doors as well.

if your car had chrome on the handles you have comfort access. In that case the behaviour is normal. If all is working right you should be able to open the door just by grabbing on the handles, locking the door by pressing the outter edge of the chrome on the handle as well as start and drive the car with the key fob in your pocket.

So update time...

Gene1986 was correct, I have keyless entry to the boot at least.
Car locked, key in pocket boot opens. Car locked, key in house, boot doesnt open!

The car is fitted with the chrome handles and little orange LED's underneath handles, but I cannot gain access to the without using the unlock button, maybe I can activate keyless entry using a dealer tool?

Will update my profile with pics this week. Also while im posting, could anyone point me in the direction of misfire problems?

Try these steps:
1: Get into vehicle normally, they way how you do. (do this in your driveway)
2: Leave key in pocket, put foot on brake and push the start button. If car starts great, if not thats ok also.
3: turn car off
4: get out of vehicle, with all doors closed touch or push on door handles, if car arms great, if not ok
5: attempt this at all door handles.

If the car starts with keys in pocket and doors do not lock or unlock, it seems that you have the "Comfort Access system" but you have faulty door handles. So to access the vehicle will be a double duty or you can use the key fob for 100% function.

hope this helps

+1. Usually comfort access will fail on the door handles. In my case I have a faulty drivers door handle....which sucks because that's the one I mostly use. It still comes in handy for me because I can open the car while walking towards it and leave my key in my pocket the rest of the way. When I'm leaving the car I just lock it using the passenger handle.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but is it possible to retrofit comfort access?

I know ACEFX was writing a guide which looked like he was pretty much done, but i believe he was banned before he completed.

I only ask since over the next year or so I intend to retrofit everything I can to my car, to the point where I end up with jsut about every option if possible xD

If you feel up to take the handle apart and repair the wire, cause ones broke. Also you can swap handles with the rear one.
Hope this helps
