If you have a security clearance (most US Secret level clearances last for 7 years, not sure about Canadian ones though). Part of my job is support for those guys over there. I don't go to Iraq or Afghanistan but I send them the things they need to do their jobs. But 95% of those jobs are things that would be shocking to most people. Things like load masters, mechanics, IT people, even cable installers. It pays well, but not quite what most people think going into it. Chad is right on about the pay and taxes but pay goes up considerably with a security clearance. Which is the hard part since most people who apply don't think the drug conviction they had in college will show up. When I got mine they sent two guys in suits who identified themselves as FBI showed up to my buddy Trevor's house in West Palm Beach and talked to him about me for 20 minutes. It's no joke, the form is 26 pages long.
I was offered a job on my last deployment by Mantech part of Dynacorp, as a civie contractor working on blown up and busted equipment but the wait list is about a year and I really didn't feel like going back overseas even though the starting pay was really, really nice.

God, what an awful start to the morning. 5 hours of sleep. High winds scattered 50 gallons of recycled materials all over my yard, which I had to pick up, in the rain, in my suit. Hour long commute, stuck behind a garbage truck, and commuter train, and then someone who let evvvvvvvvvvvveryone merge/turn in front of them. 1 hour of my life gone (and probably one third of the M3's expensive clutch).

Only good part is that it was 60 degrees, so I got to use the sunroof a bit!

And security clearances are legit. One of my college roommates (hans) needed one to get into usaf pilot training. It was weird because the agent had to know I knew Hans better than anyone else, but played dumb. It's like he was trying to read me more than learn about Hans.

I would definitely do one if I had a turbo. The turbo quiets the exhaust a bit. Otherwise, it's mostly just obnoxious.

Beats the hell out of a stock suspension as far as handling performance. I've seen them last relatively long, too. The ride wasn't super harsh. Harshness is about the same as my Bilstein Coils. Although the Bilsteins control / transfer weight much nicer.

My wife and I had a friend who was applying for a security clearance. They interviewed me, and moved on to her, got 20 minutes into the 1 hour long interview and asked if she a US citizen, she is not, and said no. The guy got up, all pissed off, and left saying 'thanks for wasting my time"

umm.... if that was important, shouldn't have asked that before?
he got the clearance, works for US Capitol Police. I think its a front for something else.

There is something about a straight pipe big turbo e36 that warms my heart.

I don't think they sound obnoxious at all

I'm sure they do more than "police" the capital. If they were ordinary cops wouldn't they be bound by oath to arrest most of the people who "work" in the capitol? Trevor said they were cool with him, he has camels (long story) and said they seemed far more interested in them. The only trouble I had was trying to remember the addresses for everywhere I've lived the last 10 years and the addresses of people I knew 10 years ago. Had to Google a bunch of that crap.

With good reason I'm sure.

He got his because he was the communications director for Sea World in Orlando when the Holy Land Amusement park closed, the camels got abandoned and he felt sorry for them. He also had some hair brained scheme to rent them out for Nativity Scenes. And it actually worked till he got tired of toting them around all December. Everything that dude does makes money somehow. He has the Midas touch. He bought my dad's old 325i E30 Vert and gave it to his then girlfriend.

I'm talking about straight pipe NA E36 being obnoxious. Turbos sound good with straight pipes. I ran my S52 without a muffler for a week while I was working on it. It sounded good at idle and 6k rpm. The rest was just too loud and didn't even sound nice.

If it makes you feel better I spent my morning taking the cat to the vet and agreeing to spend more than the amount of money I have left over after bills every month for her procedure.

Thank God for savings accounts...
