1994 530i timing chains
this is my first post on this forum and would like to know if there is a thread on doing the timing chains on the 530i M60 i have tried searching but have not found it. i bought this car a silent auction and paid very little for it. i was going to part it out but got talked into fixing it. i own a M6 and 3 633 vintage cars very familar with the 6's not the V-8's if someoine could point me in the right direction it would be great
thanks Mark ![]() ![]()

I havent owned a V8 either so cant help you with guidance, but why are you replacing it? usually its there for life, are you sure its not the hydraulic tensioner thats gone?

i bought this car and the PO told me that EURO-TECH in Pittsgurgh Pa said it needed a timing chain. that is what we are going on. i figure why not tear the front of the engine off the timing covers are all leaking and have to replace the water pump because i dont know when thats been done so we figure what the hell just do it all and learn something as we go

Do you see any indication that you need to replace any of the timing chains?

Whelp. I have a great deal of confidence in your mechanical abilities.
I have a question for you, sir: If one of your e24s didnt have an ABS sensor at all, how do you think the car would drive? would your Anti-Lock light go on? would the caliper feel as if it was sticking or frozen? My E28 (almost exactly an E24 sedan) is missing ABS sensors in the front for sure, i never looked at the rear. Under braking, my front passenger side brake will stick and :lock! lock! lock! lock!: down on the rotor and its terribly frustrtating and somewhat scary. I replaced the caliper and noticed no difference. The front driverside is also missing the sensor but that works fine. What gives? I can only think its the sensor. The anti lock light only comes on if i take too long easing the clutch out in gear to be rolling, if that makes any sense, or dont accelerate fast enough ![]() ABS Woes

well we pulled the engine this weekend. laying under the car you would think that the engine would come out with both exhaust headers in place. well they dont..... you have to take off passenger side for removal

Thanks so much for your reply!!! And i apologize for the OT post. I was told lines could be an issue also so I got steel braided units and will replace all of it. If not, i'm just deleting ABS. Thanks for your help!!!! Back to your car now though lol

Great pics of the M6030 engine, it is a fairly exotic engine when compared to typical 3.0 liter inline six cylinders.

the more i dive into this project car and this engine i really like it. i swore i would never mess with a V8 but as you said it is very exotic and well designed i feel. i already have plans for this engine in another car and it is not a 5 but another BMW i will post pics of the rebuild.......and the best part i only paid $250.00 for this car

The car in questions is an antique (87 E28) not an E34 so not for this forum. I linked a thread to the E28 forum if you'd lke to chime in there. I only posted because OP is an E24 head and the E24 and E28 are mechanically identical

spend this weekend cleaning every thing up and getting bay ready for new engine plus started to tear old enginge down for rebuild. i found a new "short block" from a friend at a BMW dealer who had the block in the parts room since 1997 so i got it for about nothing here are some pics
get area ready to clean engine bay ![]() engine bay before cleaning ![]() ![]() after cleaning... this is when you find areas like the one under the brake master cylinder...what happens is people over fill and the fluid runs down and lays on frame rail eats the paint then rust starts this will be repainted ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Here are some pics of the engine being torn down i think some will enjoy seeing what makes a M60 tick this car sat for two months while the owner was deciding what to do with it and something tried setting up house under the intake ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() a lot of cleaning ahead for me ![]()

You clean and treat your cars like I do mine. Takes for ever doesn't it?! The results though - so worth while!! Do you de-burr as you go?

the real reason why i am doing this build is because of my nephew he is just learning to wrench on cars and i am trying to show him the right way. being clean is so important. (he says we spend more time cleaning up than working on the cars).... i will stop half way thru something and clean up...thats picking up all the tools and everything... then start again... i see people all the time working in filth and dont understand it.....if you pull a engine or anything clean that area before you put the new item in same as the part you are putting back in if it's used. this has a 2 fold effect. 1.) it looks better 2.)you can see if there are any leaks and where they are coming from
