Winter Tires and Rims

I am able to get a good deal on a set of 17" Motegi rims with 225/45R17 winter tires.

Anyone know if these will work on an X1, which calls for 225/50R17 tires. Will the speedometer be off with these tires?

These are lower profile so the speedometer will be off and won't be ideal. Also, I'm not sure all 17s will properly clear the brakes.

These Motegi 17" rims are supposed to have a high positive offset. The seller is willing to let me put them on the car and try them for a day or two before I buy.

That's almost a full inch difference in diameter, resulting in a speedometer reading about 3.5% too fast. I assume that means you'll be inflating your odometer reading as well.

Thanks Rod, thats exactly what I figured out as well. That means I will be robbing myself of 850km each year on my lease. Of course, the winter tires will only be on for half the year, so that mitigates the loss. But $500 for 4 nice rims and almost new tires is a great deal.

If the tires are in really good condition, you can list them on Craigslist. Unfortunately, you might have to wait until next year to get the best price for them. But at least that will help cover the cost of the new tires.

BMW analog speedo's are about 3%-5% off already. Odd thing is the digital speed/cruise control setting isn't... People were going to check if actual mileage was off but I imagine it isn't. Logs of threads on it, but no one really knows why BMW is off on the analog speedo when other manufacturers aren't.

For what it's worth check the mileage reading using highway markers. My speedometer reads high but odometer is accurate based on several multimillion tests.
