automatic transmission problems, also will not idle

hi, i have been lurking for a while on these forums but never had a reason to post, i just made this account to try to get some help with a problem i've been having with my 318i e36.

a few weeks ago i started having strange problems with my car. when driving my automatic transmission light would turn on at random times. also it seems like the car does not want to idle, i can keep it running by increasing RPM above idle but the car will stop if i allow it to idle. the car has 207,000 k's.

if there is any other information i can provide let me know, thanks in advance for the help!

Does the transmission do anything odd when the light comes on? Rough shifting, etc? Also what sort of things have you looked at already if anything? Have you ever cleaned the MAF of ICV? Air filter even? Last spark plug change? There are tons of things that can cause idle to be off!

Welcome to the 'fest! Everyone here is completely willing to help with any problem, but the more info the better, no one will ever complain about too much info in a problem diagnosis thread!

The stickies at the top of the forum can be a huge help too. There is a link to a Bentley manual for your car in PDF form up there that can help you troubleshoot tons of problems, as well as an oil guide, mods list, even a sheet for vendors for parts too.

Vacuum leaks are probably causing the idle issue, and the transmission really needs to be inspected.

Does your engine make any funny noises for the short time it is idling for or when you rev the engine? Also have you inspected the transmission fluid? Can you smell it burning at all when your driving? Is the fluid low? Does it shift roughly?
