i'm new to e39 audio, need help!

Hey, got a 1998 BMW 528i Manual with 74k miles. So happy. I love it, but one little problem. The sound system in it. I'm not sure how to explain the sound but its like muddy and feels like im listening to it from a mile away. Should i change the head unit? i have a JVC one. But i think its the speakers, i know that they;re 5 1/4 and 25mm tweeters right? I was wondering what are some good speakers? i found some on ebay but i don't know if they'll fit because of the depth and stuff. i don't want it to be like loud, just good quality. getting subs soon

Yes, those Kenwoods fit great. Its what I have. You have to understand though. The sound system uses a Woofer in each front door,a mid, and a tweeter. Those Kenwoods are 3 way speakers. Not sure about your car ,but mine was a non DSP car. The amp in the trunk has wires that go to the front speakers and back sets of speakers etc. . If you just install those Kenwoods, then they will only act as woofers. Better to replace the head unit completely along with some nice 3 way speakers in the doors. You will need: new head unit,3 way 5 1/4 speakers, special adapter from head unit to bmw dash harness, European to USA antenna adapter. These can be found at Crutchfield.

I believe the priorities to yielding the most audible improvement to the overall sound are:
1. Upgrade the front door speaker components.
2. Install a powered subwoofer
3. Upgrade the rear deck speakers
4. Replace the amp
5. Replace the head unit.
Do a search for what others have done, why and the results of their changes.
