OT: Am I getting hosed?
My son back out of my garage and into a "friend" of my wife's 2006 infinity. I had to write a check for $1700 for a new door and paint. The damage was all for a new door. 10 hours labor, paint, etc. Parts were pretty much the door. Seems high and in hindsight I should have made them get a few quotes.
Does this sound reasonable?

Doesn't sound bad at all. I'm not sure if a new door was needed (body shops can do wonders with the old stuff). But yeah, you didn't get hosed.
For example, just the front bumper for my X5 is around $1,200 with labor and such. A door is much more involved than a bumper

Sounds right to me. And, been there done (paid for) that. It's part of raising kids. With any luck, that will be the big one for the year! Hang in there.

Somebody cut across me at a stoplight recently, tore the front bumper off of my 545, and did $10,500 in damage. It's amazing how fast the expenses add up.

Thanks. It's the second time I have had to write a check for this car! I backed into it and had to write a check for 700 for a bumper cover. She parks in the turnaround even though I ask her not too because its easy to forget a car is there. Then it happens again. Women! Wouldn't you not park there for fear of it happening again? I'm obviously venting.

Sounds good to me. Three years ago I was in a major accident costing $14,125. The following costs related only to the drivers door.
Hinge pillar - repair 4 hours @$51=$204 Hinge pillar - refinish .6 hours @$51=$31 Moulding rocker panel - repair 1.0 hrs @$51=$51 Moulding rocker panel - refinish 1.2 hrs @$51=$61 Door Shell, front - new $1,130 Door shell, front - refinish 3.3 hrs @$51=168 Weather striping - new $168 Moulding front door belt - new $108 Moulding Front door - new $168 Moulding - refinish .6 hrs @51 =$31 Mirror - repair 1.0 hrs @$51=$51 Mirror - refinish .6 hrs @$51=$31 Inner door panel insulation - new $67 Total just for the drivers door=$2,261. Considering it was in January 2010 at an independent specializing in BMW and MBs your price doesn't seem out of line at all. Have your son hit the fender the next time. A new fender (for a BMW) in 2010 was 'only' $540 plus plus plus.

That's why I got my new 535 with rear view camera and PDC. I did a bump that way about 5 yrs ago. Thankfully it was my Subaru slightly bumping into a 5 yr old Nissan Altima and no tangible damages to any vehicle.

If I know frends are coming I put the AT&T orange road cone (i found abandoned) in the turn around part of the driveway. Backing into a cone is much easier on a car!

Sounds about right. I only had a deep ding on my rear door and that cost me 1500 to fix. No parts ordered but they had to blend panels which drove up the cost.

its about right. I had a 07 Infiniti G35 that someone backed into. The rear fender and the rear bumper needed work and the bill came back at $3200.00

Tell her to park in the street. I hate people who park in areas that is hazardous. If they choose to park there, the accident is their fault as much as the driver who hit them.

Thanks for all the replies. Good point above about two men hitting the car twice and me complaining about women!! The first time I hit her car, she was leaving her car for the weekend and going away with my wife, I asked her specifically to leave her car in the street for fear of me forgetting it was there. She didn't want to leave it in the street, so I of course I forgot it was there a day later and hit it. Pissed me off to write the check because I told her not to park there. Major fight with my wife and I had to write the check. A year later my son does it but with more damage. My point is, after the first time, why would you park there again? As you can tell I am still pissed and venting.

Joe, she is as much at fault as you and your son, she created an environment which increase the chance an accident. I would write her a check for 50% of damage which seems fair.

BTW, when parking in the street just be sure you are not near a driveway on the other side that someone might back out of. I had a car hit once that way (and no, it was not my fault for parking it there).
