BMWs updated water pump?

I've just now come across the variety of water pumps with the metal impeller. Graf,Geba,Hepo, etc. But recently heard about the oem BMW water pump with updated to the composite impeller. Has anyone had experience with them?

I see two different ones here at Turner Motorsport...

2. http://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-39...-impeller.aspx

I'm going to put my answer to that over here, in order to keep it all together:
- What brand of waterpump to buy (1)

Very good thread!
I cut and pasted EVERYTHING from those two advertisements into that thread so that we can keep all the answers together for the experts to advise us (I'm not the expert - I just gather data).

From your mein auto, you seem to have multiple bimmers, so your answer may be more complicated than ours (with only the E39).

It seems, from careful reading of the advertisements, that only the "early M50 & M52" engines 'may' have had plastic impellers - but then BMW quickly switched to composite impellers (the aftermarket has always had the metal impellers).

Assuming this statement by Turner Motorsports is true, then the only question is what E39 cars used the "early M50 and M52" engines?

I actually have an e39 530i. I just noticed that I mistakenly typed in e30.

Both the e39 and the e60 use the M54 engine. Hence, the waterpump and other components should be interchangeable.

My water pump is the BMW with the metal impeller. It replaced the original plastic one. I have had no trouble with it. It has about 45K on it.

HEPU easily lasts 10y/150K, just ask the Volvo people.

Anyway, the HEPU in my M52 engine is now 7 years old, zero issues. Rock solid.
It is $68:

I would stay away from the cast metal impellers like http://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-39...-impeller.aspx.

They probably work fine, but the casting looks pretty lame with the impeller blades very thick and with bad edges. It has to cut down on the effeciency of the pump as well as being a heavier blade to sling around. Ill stick with the folded metal or composite blades.

Look, you can't go wrong with Stewart ($200) or Hepu ($68).

Although unusual, Stewart WP has its share of problems too:

This issue of WP brand has been beaten to death in this forum.
Remember this is BMW forum, people tend to overkill in what they do (myself included).
Just replace the WP (whatever brand you choose) and move on.
