left lane driving then and now...

I imagine the problem of drivers clogging up the left lane on freeways varies depending on where your are in the U.S.

I noticed many years ago that on the parkways around New York City, Long Island and northern Jersey, that there is really no observance of the left lane being reserved for faster drivers. I presume that since there is always a massive volume of cars on those roads, the drivers there have essentially given up of the idea of traveling faster, and are instead happy simply to avoid traffic stoppages.

I'm in the burbs of Hartford, Connecticut, and I started to notice slower drivers in the left lane (many of them unwilling to move) at about the same time gas prices really started to climb (approx. 5 yrs ago?).

I'm just curious to hear if anyone has notices a similar trend in their neck of the woods.

Obviously, I'm passionate about this topic (enough to post this). I have slowed down over the years, but in a modern german car - 80-90 is simply is not that fast. Suspensions, tires brakes etc.. have all evolved in the past decades. But if anything, I think highways have gotten slower.. Maybe its due to more traffic? Maybe its different in other parts of the country? Do you find drivers are slower now than 10 or 15 years ago? Do you also see more drivers not speeding in the left most lane?

Just curious.

Unfortunately, the left lane rule doesn't exist in Los Angeles.

In KS I get people moving over for me frequently. In CA I don't think I have had it done for me a single time in 4 years.
