It's a fair complaint. BMW makes a big deal about "Efficient Dynamics" throughout their marketing campaign.

Grupster, my mileage drops from an average of 20mpg to 16.9mpg in the winter months here in Connecticut. The other posters were right, in the cold weather, the gas mileage drops. In the summer, I'm right up there with a steady 20-21mpg, and close to 30 on the highway, even better. I think that's what your problem is. It's mighty cold in Chicago, r ight? Car just doesn't run as efficiently. Take care, check it again in the warmer months, and let us know.

Most likely the winter blend in the NorthEast requires more ethanol in the gas; ethanol has lower energy/vol when burn than gasoline. for us here in Northwest, ethanol is added all year round up to 10% on all gasoline brand, I don't see dramatic decrease between summer and winter.

BTW, we used to have pure gsaoline between April-Nov then 10% ethanol is added(oxyginated gas as they called it) into gasoline from Nov till March.

Guys, Phoenix1 has already accepted he was mistaken...but to his defense, if he is comparing HIS car, an E61 to a 335i, well, it is about 400 pounds heavier. So from his perspective, he wasn't far off.
