Oil change after break-in period?

hi all,

Just curious if anyone replaces the oil after break in period? I don't think the dealership would offer this?

If you choose to change the oil prior to the 15,000 miles recommended by BMW, you need to either do it yourself (exceedingly easy) or pay to have it done.

If you use the search function you will find many, many threads discussing oil.

It's also been said that BMW typically breaks the engine in at the factory. In that case an oil change would probably not be helpful.

Only for M Cars.

They don't break the engine in at the factory. It takes 500 to 1000 miles to do that.
An oil change at 500 to 1000 miles may not hurt....in that you may get some of the initial engine shavings out of the system.

I'm also interested in this topic. I got about 2,500 on my 335i sport and I'm thinking I'll pay for first one in spring.
I've read allot of threads on this and what I got out is.... There is no harm in doing it. But there COULD be harm if not done. I don't think anyone has any solid proof and mostly it's about what makes you feel better.
So, for me little money is worth it. Otherwise I'll wonder if I should have done it if something goes wrong later. BTW, I'm wanting to keep this for a long time. If you are not then don't.

I encourage you to do it yourself as this is the easiest oil change you will ever do. It's literally a ten minute process.

In addition to BMW labeled oil, the approved oils are:

Castrol Syntec European Formula SAE 0W-30

Mobil 1 SAE 0W-40

Pennzoil Platinum European Formula Ultra SAE 5W-30

Valvoline SynPower SAE 5W-30

I think he means in general.

The filter is under the hood, near the front of the engine, the oil plug is easily accessible under the engine, youll probably spend more time setting up the ramps than changing the oil

Welcome to 1980. BMW does do a run in on the cars at the factory. It's not a substitution for the real world break-in that BMW describes in the owner's manual but I doubt that with modern manufacturing techniques there are but a few shavings in the engine. Plus we are talking about very sophisticated engines with high tech synthetic oil. There is no need for a break in oil change in this day and age.

Exactly. The F30 is very maintenance friendly.

It may be "said" that BMW breaks-in the engine at the factory, but it wouldn't be true.

In 2005, I visited the plant in Munich where the N52s and the V-10 for the E60 M5 was built. The high-volume N52 was tested on a machine then installed in cars. The V-10 was hand-built and tested by hand.

When I picked up my F30 last July, I toured the factory again. The N20s and N55s were also being tested for a few minutes in an automated machine then assembled into cars.

Oil change discussions on BMW forums are like religions: everone's is different.

For my part, I can't see how it's good for an engine to go a year or 15K on the original lubricant. I had mine changed at 4K miles.

quick questions, i am gonna diy to change my oil at 75k mark, but what is the good interval to do the oil filter change and is it as easy as well?

My new baby is getting one at 2500 miles...
Call me old school, but I've paid for others abuse with used BMW's.

I changed mine at 1500k, saw lots of silver shavings and shiny floating particles. Its always a good investment.

hit 3500 miles today, so i will do an oil change this weekend using GC. from the DIY pics posted on f30driver, it looks very very easy

Wouldn't the filter pick up any particle that is big enough to see?

Btwy, Audi now does the first oil change at 5K, and then every 10K afterwards.

For the A4 at least, it has been claimed at various times that the factory oil is a little different, supposedly tailored for some sort of a break-in, and that changing it prematurely is not a good idea. But I have no idea whether that is true or not
