Buy 2013 X1 xDrive or wait for 2014 or 2015

I thought I saw in one of the threads a recommendation to wait for a 2014 or 2015 (can't remember which year) - supposedly will be disappointed if don't wait for the later model. We're considering ED since we are already planning a trip to Germany in late April.
Can anyone shed some light on which model year and why? And, recommend a dealer for ED. We're in NC.

Don't wait for 2015. They are moving to the Mini Countryman chassis and FWD.

No details yet on 2014 changes but don't expect much if any.

I'm personally waiting for 2014 changes to be announced but will not wait for 2015.

I expect 2014 details in January.

If you want RWD don't wait for the 2015 which will be in a FWD chassis.

I could see waiting to pick up a "last of the 2014" models in late summer/early fall 2014 when the new ones start arriving. Of course if you can do that then I guess you don't need a new car right now and you are OK with waiting almost two years.

And miss out for 2 years????

Does anyone know when Ordering for the 2014 will open up will there be significant changes for 2014. How much is the usual price increase year to year. I am in a dilema should i order the 2013 right now and get the $750 discount and avoid the 2014 price increase. Or should i hold out for significant changes in a 2014.

How is that different from a Mexican Audi or VW?

Would FWD get the same MPG as RWD and not needing AWD for the occasional light snow condition? Maybe BMW could re-define the FWD driving experience...

More likely a very slight less MPG for fwd but you're talking minor .1mpg, and there's a chance it could go up depending on how a fwd vs rwd drives are designed. The biggest MPG I think you'll see is a possible 3 cylinder turbo (B38) in the new F platform X1 that's already used in the mini. BMW could make a better fwd drivers car than most cars out there but many 'drivers' including bmw 'drivers' do not like how fwd cars drive. There are personal likes and scientific reasons why driving wheels shouldn't be burdened with additional forces (turning) at the same time as it increases the chance you'll lose turning control and power together.

RWD cars are fine in light snow, it's primarily about the driver, not the car. A car with 50/50 weight distribution it doesn't matter as much which wheels drive as a forward engine and rwd does that has a 60/40 or worse weight distribution. Also a 50/50 weight distribution car going up a hill will do better with rwd than fwd because the hill causes more weight to sit on the back wheels. I have a fwd car and a steep driveway that I've more than once had to back up the hill to make it as the slope is enough to take too much weight off the front wheels for them to have enough traction.

Hope this helps, but in short, rwd allows you more control of the car (good and bad depending on the drive) and fwd gives you less control which (good or bad depending on the driver). In light snow get good snow tires and rwd and fwd are fine. In ice and thick snow, get awd to increase the chance you can get home and if you're home, don't go out because someone in a 4x4 will get up to speed but forgets they can't stop as fast or make turns at normal speeds and will hit you. You ever notice you see more 4x4's off the road than fwd or rwd cars in the winter?

PS. AWD does kill some mpg but it helps in rain and other slippery conditions, not just snow or ice. Awd cars on certain tracks with lots of corners can out perform fwd or rwd as anytime you can spin the wheels, awd can help by giving you 2 more wheels to get grip with. Even in a FWD or RWD if you try to pull out onto a road fast you can spin wheels and awd could save you then as well. If I lived in Florida I'd not worry about fwd/rwd vs awd and if I drove up to Vermont at times I'd throw some chains in the car. If you want to spend more and be safer (nothing wrong with this either) go for awd and realize you'll spend about a buck each fillup to have awd.
