Cool Z3 heater control dial removal

Hi , the bulbs have blown on my heater control. Does anyone know how I get to them to replace them?

Thank you.

Welcome to the 'fest !
There's a wealth of information to be found by using the search function at the top of the page (use the advanced search)
I happen to remember that Ron Stygar posted a fix it for the HVAC bulbs and found the thread by using the search function.
Here's a link
http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...highlight=hvac

(there's a bunch more threads...just search HVAC or bulb+replacement) in the Z3 forum.

Get a Bently Manual they are extremely helpful. You have to remove the center console. I would get the trim tools from Bavarian as they will not mar your interior. Remove the climate control assembly. Install is the reverse.

You don't have to remove the console, It's tricky and very tight, but it can be done through the radio hole. Remove the radio, remove the mounting screws for the A/C control panel, reach in and twist/turn/cuss it untill you can get a pair of long needle nosed pilers on the bulb.....

BTW the fan speed doesn't have a bulb in it, it relies on the temp control bulb to light it. The last time I had my console out I pulled the A/C control panel apart and hot glued an 12v LED (marker light bayonet type) in it and aimed it at the fan control and it works really well now, I can actually see all the numbers around the circle....

Here goes nothing

Thanks. I think I will at least give it a try through the radio hole before I put it back in this weekend. I am fully equiped to cuss as much as needed.

I too have the same issue, my fan control is not illuminated. So there is just 2 bulbs to illuminate all 3 dials, not 3 bulbs? Thanks..

Lamps are sure tight in place. Had to use long nose to get them out. Not sure how you would do this with it in the dash.

Yes. Strangely, there are only two bulbs, and they only illuminate two dials. The air directional control dial does not illuminate, and never has. I read where one guy rigged a separate light bulb and just put it near the unlit dial and got (in his words) satisfactory light through the white parts of the dial. I have replaced my two bulbs, memorized the dark third dial, and learned to think of it as one of those endearing quirks. "nothing is perfect"

well I have just learned of only 2 bulbs! I knew all 3 dials lid up ,now only the blower and temp.dials light up, guess 1of them bulbs is out for sure!!well had to check it out for my self my 2000 2.3 z3 ,has only (1) went to dealership, told them what I drive ( bought it there) he showed me the diagram. so I went home and pulled the radio out, which is very easy .got a small mirror and a flash lite .sure enough only 1 bulb, and still good !while I had the radio out I sprayed the temp. con. nob from the back with silicon spray. and this is for 2000 2.3 Z3.

1997 Z3 Climate Control Installation

I just learned that my climate control needs to be replaced. I have it to the point where I can turn it to look at it. I see from the posts here that it is difficult to remove the assembly. My next problem will be to get it out and reinstall the new one when it gets here in 8-10 business days. Any comments?

heater housing bulb

Are the bulbs available to purchase online/ebay?
is it a dealer item only? you have to buy the bulb and housing, bulb does not seperate from black housing.

Yes, a bulb in a black base as shown in:

Any single-DIN radio will fit. Buy it anywhere. You will also need a radio antenna adapter for the German antenna wire and the job is much easier with a vehicle-specific harness adapter available through most stereo stores, including on-line stores, such as Crutchfield.

There are many threads here on the topic. Near the top of the page, on the right, is a button labeled "Search This Forum." Click that and search for "radio," "stereo," etc.

I'm not sure why you need that. The more modern approach is to get an Ipod, MP3, or even Pandora-capable radio. Any of those will be far more capable than a CD changer.

I agree. Good point!
Just had to replace the heating control dash light bulbs, $12 each. Holy expensive!
