X1 E84 (2011 - current)
The new to the US BMW X1 will arrive at BMW dealers in the fall of 2012 as a 2013 model year. Get your X1 28i with either sDrive (RWD) or xDrive (AWD) or get the US exclusive I6 N55 powered X1 35i dDrive. |

You may want to work with BMS to retrofit a wheel with paddles and their wiring harness. It's not worth it to mod your existing wheel IMO, but it can be done. I believe the M3 wheels are easier to come by than the M Sports. I believe many M3 drivers swap to the M Sport wheel so check eBay. The M3 wheel is still nice IMO. I used to be a MT snob. If available, I would not order a manual in the X1. I do still have my S2000 to toy around with however.

How are you liking your Stage 1 after you've had it on for some time now? So undecided to get one now or wait it out for a Cobb unit

We've started working on a Stage2 upgrade box that plugs in to the Stage1 kit unlocking CAN features, more power, etc, so stay tuned for more HP.

Thanks Terry, awesome news! Any chance you will include throttle remapping in Stage 2?

I think it's great, well worth the money with such a simple install. I am also hoping stage 2 includes throttle remapping in D mode. would probably lead me to upgrade.

Install is much easier without that step as you don't need to remove/loosen the engine cover or route the extra cable around the engine. I can install/uninstall in 5-10 minutes. I chose to route the cables under the stabilizer bar and place the control box by the air filter housing. This seemed to be the best option to protect from the elements. The X1 doesn't have the same weather proof covered area as the F30 as outlined in the instructions. It was rainy and wet today so I didn't go full throttle but there is a noticeable torque increase and less turbo lag in D/Drive. I never felt the need to switch to DS like I used to. (I don't have the throttle lag/hesitation issues others have reported). It should be dry and sunny all weekend so I should be able to really see what the tune is all about. According to the folks on the F30 forum, BMW switched to the electronic wastegate on the N20 engines July 2012. BMWVin.com and RealOEM are generally pretty accurate and it seems that all US X1 28i have N20 and no N26. I will try and find where this is stamped on the engine and take a picture. Bottom line is...this greatly simplifies the BMS Stage 1 install/uninstall.

I posted this in post #6 of this thread but was not aware BMW switched to an electronic wastegate on the N20. I suspect this is the case for all US X1s.
The sticker under my hood shows ULEV II. Perhaps the title of this thread needs to be changed from N26 to N20 or N20/N26. Last edited by nospam; 02-10-2013 at 12:22 PM. |

I don't think I can edit the title... I just referred to the install as an N26 because that's what Terry at BMS said the engine designation was.
Mine says ULEV II PC. so maybe N20?

I personally cannot wait for the stage 2 with CAN features. I don't think I will be able to resist buying it when it becomes available.

I mean at a discount of course... But I am a sucker for aftermarket mods... I had a 4runner that was supercharged with larger fuel injectors, a piggyback computer, fuel pump, headers, etc... it was the demo truck for the Santa Ana company Split Second. Now I don't want to revisit that whole mess again ($$$!!!), but it is fun tweaking a stock-looking car for that wow-factor when you punch it!
This whole install was so SIMPLE! When I think about all those hours I spent installing things, troubleshooting, uninstalling... it was a great learning experience with engines (for somewhat of a novice), but still... many, many, many hours

This tune has made the 28i so much more drivable. Driving in D is like what DS use to be (when you need it) and DS is on steroids now. The power delivery when going full throttle is not as smooth as the my N54 was, but it feels almost as fast. I'm used to high revs from driving Hondas so no biggie. |

hope it holds up in the cold
Terry and crew installed stage one shortly before I moved to Park City, UT. Car is fantastic and it has put many a smile on my face. I also like that I can drive a different way and also get great gas mileage. Easy install and well worth it.
My only concern so far, is the temps here are very low. I have a covered but outside parking space. It was 8 degrees this morning. I hope the electronics hold up in the cold. Overall it has been a great addition. |

I just installed the BMS Stage 1 piggyback in my wife's X1 (28i). We have the N20 (not N26) and thus utilized all 4 connections. Took about 45 minutes - easy. No CEL or anything. Only had to reset the clock and good to go.
First impressions: lots more pull. Neck-whipping acceleration in the higher rev-range. Seems very balanced, as you can meander around town with fuel economy in mind... then stomp on it and really feel the added hp/tq. Can't imagine what Stage 2 will look like. Well done Terry and BMS! |
