yeah, paperwork aside the VIN tells you everything. Just because you want it to be an M3 doesn't make it so.

Link to articles you read stating so, or scans of said articles. I think what you've read is someone's conversion of a touring to M3 drivetrain, because they DID NOT MAKE AN M3 TOURING, in Africa or anywhere else. The log books mean nothing. They could have put it down as an M6 and it would have been no more valid. The MOT inspection documents mean nothing, because they simply go off what the car is registered as. If someone registered it as an M3, they don't question it. Determining what model the car is isn't their job.

- Does not have ///M GmbH VIN
- Does not have ///M engine
- Does not have ///M transmission
- Does not have ///M brakes
- Does not have ///M Suspension

and

- BMW never made an M3 estate.

What more proof do you need? MOT papers do not mean anything other than somebody entered the model of your car down incorrectly because it has ///M badges on it.

Don't take our response as a negative. I LOVE the car. I think most of use here do.We often bemoan the fact that the Touring was never offered here. At 500 pounds, you stole it, even if it isn't an M. More pictures of it, please?

Franklyn the Alpina was never a factory BMW option. They are a separate company that would buy a bimmer, then alter it and resell it.

It's a nice car, but it isn't an M3.

This was a great thread though.

We're used to relatively little corruption in our record keepers in the U.S and the U.K., but even is SA all it takes is a little palm greasing to get records altered as you want. I suspect something like that happened early in your car's life and it's just been carried through until now.
As everyone's stated, if it's in good condition you've still got a great bargain.

Probably will need the wiring harness and ECU, but it's pretty-much a bolt-in.

IIRC Frank's (Mr. Gusta) wheels are style 93 off a 7 series.

You'll want the stronger transmission from an M3, as well as a limited-slip differential, too.

Either way I want your car.... So there is that... Perhaps it was at some point a dealer optioned M tec package but as of now if its sporting an m50 I am afraid its a good old fashioned 3. Quick but not M quick. A little forced induction will get you sorted though.

man am i coming late to *this* party!!!

op, while you may not have an //M touring, they are a wonderful vehicle and yours looks sharp!!we never managed to get them in the states...

we also didn't get the 6cylinder in the compacts, either...just the m42 and m44 motors in the e36 chassis. (i have one that will get that little tidbit 'corrected', though...)

call me skeptical, but anything coming out of the continent of africa should be looked at with a bit of skepticism. well, except for that lottery thing i won. should be sitting pretty in a bit with those winnings!! the best part about it?? i didn't even need to buy a ticket!!

so welcome to the fest. love the touring. please feel free to post in some more pics, and remember, we're going to be doing a calendar this year again. would *love* some touring love from across the pond!!!!
