F22 / F23 2 Series (2014 - Current)
The 2 Series coupe is the replacement for the E82/E88 1 series coupe. Production starts in November 2013 on the 228i (N20) and M235i (N55) coupes. Look for them in dealerships in February 2014. The convertible F23 2 series will follow in the fall of 2014.

4 Cylinder 1 or 2-series? Any speculation?

Is there any speculation on when a 4 cylinder 1 or 2 series may come out?

With premium gas hitting over $4 again where I live (I'm calling for $5 next year), I'd like to not get a 6 cylinder car.

Is it even possible to do 4 in the current E82 platform?

This is the last production year for the current US 1-series. The new 2-series begins production this fall to replace our current 1-series coupe and convertible. I would guess that the new 2 series will have the same engine choices as the current 3 series sedan. 4 cylinder turbo and 6 cylinder turbo. It's rumored the new 2 series will be about the same size as the e46 coupe which will be prefect, IMO. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing pictures of the new 2 series without any camo. I'm hoping it won't have the crappy electric steering the new 3 series has, but it probably will unfortunately. We'll see. Hopefully it will be a great drivers car like the current 1 series is.

Yes, I believe they are supposed to do that. Don't know if it will be rear or front wheel drive....have heard both sides.

Fascinating. Maybe I'll hold off replacing my E46 for one or two more years!

I actually think the current 1 series will continue for 2014 for a few reasons:
-The 2 series hasn't been unveiled at an auto show yet-- we would've seen it already and all we've seen are heavily disguised prototypes so far and renderings
-BMW typically gets 7 years out of body style...The 1 coupe was introduced in 2008 so 7 model years would mean 2014 would be the last

Think back to the recent 4 series "concept" that was introduced. THe 4 will replace the e92 this fall, and its no secret. We have yet to see even a "concept' 2 series unvelied yet.

I'm really looking forward to the 2 series gran coupe, but my guess is that won't be unveiled until a year after the 2 door version so 2016!

According to the production schedule Jon posted in Ask a Dealer, the new 2 series coupe starts production this fall and will be a 2014 model.

I actually would consider a 1er with a 3-cyl diesel engine if it was priced right. I was surprised with the Polo TDI I drove a few months ago; thought it was a 4-cyl but found it it was only a 3-cyl. Would explain the slight coarseness around 2000rpm but I'm not gonna argue about the fuel savings.

The four banger does definitely get better gas mileage, but so far a friend with an F30 328i sedan that he replaced his E90 328i sedan with hasn't noticed a massive difference at the pump. Part of the difference gets soaked up because the new 4-cylinder is forced induction and therefore requires mid-grade or better gas, while the old 6 could run happily on the regular gas.

Of course, he's not that easy of a driver... he drives his BMW the way it should be driven in my opinion and he really enjoys the car... stick shift, all the suspension toys and none of the iDrive stuff... so YMMV literally. The four-cylinder mated with the auto by all accounts gets very good gas mileage, but with the stick you're going to lose a little because the auto is very aggressive on fuel savings.

I think last I talked to him a few weeks ago, he was getting about 27-28 mpg whereas in his E90 he was getting about 25-26mpg. Not a massive difference, and puts it about equal in cost.

Having said all that, the 4-cylinder engine is a marvelous piece of work that makes more power than the old 6 with better efficiency. If you don't drive it too hard, then you may see even better economy. Of course, if you really want economy then there are plenty of cars out there that get good economy... just not necessarily from BMW

They can't reveal it yet since it'll have the same front end as the LCI F20 most likely. They still have hatches to sell and probably don't want people saying they'll wait a few months for a much better looking front end (at least I hope it is...).

Anything would be better than the current F20's face! Could be, although BMW typically waits for the 4th model year of body style to do a facelift. And given that they're introducing a separate series for coupes (in this case the 2), I think they'll try and maintain more distincitive faces between the 2 even after the 1 gets a facelift.

I've always liked the way the F20 looked. Even the E87 wasn't that bad even if the boot/trunk was laughably small. But of course my opinion is moot in North America........

Usually they do, but it certainly looks like the LCI is coming later this year:

http://www.germancarforum.com/commun...cussion.47725/

The E87 LCI happened at the same time as the E81, E82, E88 release, so they've done it before to coincide with the release of new variants, wouldn't be a stretch to think they're doing the same. I don't think they'll share the exact same front end this time, at least based on the current camo between the two.

Do you think the 1 coupe will be viewed as a future classic or a swing and a miss like the BMW compact?

What is it that you don't like about the f20's "face"? I think these designs are heavily influenced by pedestrian impact regulations. Europe and America love regulations and the special interest money they can collect from regulating everything.

+1. Most front engine cars destined for Europe are flat nosed with too high hoods. One of the few exceptions in the new BRZ/FR-S pair, because the flat-4 sits low enough to have adequate space over the engine to collapse when you mow those pedestrians down. The real trick is how manufacturers are integrating this requirement with their traditional styling. Only Audi has been making it work, mostly because their cars already had the big ugly nose designed in awhile ago so that we're already used to it.

The US will get a 2 series coupe, not 1 series coupe.

Sounds like we'll get an M235i coupe, basically the same as the hatchback M135i that's getting rave reviews over in Europe.

Later, maybe in 3-4 years, we'll get a 1 series FWD sedan, and also a 2 series 4-door grand coupe.

That's the rumor anyway.

I attended BMW's presentation to the BMWCCA at the NY auto show a few weeks ago. They had one of the desingers for the 1 series GT (the FWD concept there). They didn't say it outright, but hinted that the next gen 1 series will be FWD. IN other words, the current gen (F20/22) will stay RWD but the following model (all variants 1 & 2 series) will likely be FWD. I doubt they'll introduce a 1 series sedan during this platforms's lifecycle but maybe they will to coincide with the next-gen one.

You sure it's not 1 series FWD and 2 series RWD? That's been the rumor to date.

I actually asked that question and in a very roundabout, obtuse way the answer was no. Basically, the guy started talking about how the 1 GT concept looks like a BMW, drives like a BMW and you can't tell its FWD blah, blah, blah.

Hope i misinteepreted though
