Really thinking about buying a 528i

Hello everyone, I am not a bmw owner yet, but I would like to be.

Early next spring or at the end of winter I would like to get a 2009 528i (I don't know about CPO yet). I am very meticulous, so I have been doing research for a very long time. I understand these cars are more finicky than their main stream counterparts. What I worry about is that it seems that some things are not just "more likely", but inevitable, like the transmission issue - It seems that everyone will eventually get the "slam"? and require either the solenoids or mechatronic changed? It also seems that the replacement of control arms and bushings will happen before 100k miles.

When looking for a car I would like getting one that has sub 50k miles, and with a bit of original warranty left. I'm not quite sure about the CPO. For it to make sense to buy the CPO, it would mean that I expect at least $2000 (cost of CPOing) worth of drive train repairs - failures within 2 years. From all I've read it seems like the N52 engine possibly only suffers from a knocking sound, but the transmission seems to be the big issue. From reading posts it seems that a member here successfully cured his problem with a solenoi kit installation (less than $1000).

I won't be driving the car hard; I won't be driving the car at all, my wife will as I'm legally blind.

I have been a car lover forever; I currently own a Honda, which served as my wife's college communter (100+ miles a day). When she graduates, we will only need something to get around town with, and go on trips every once in a while. I don't need hyper-reliability, but I also don't like imminent failures.

What I do want is something that when I go into the garage, it makes me smile. Something that makes me stare at it, and makes me want to go on drives for the sake of it. I think this car could be it. What ideas or suggestions do you guys have?

Since you are looking at an E60 2009 528i also have a look at the new 328i. It has the same engine as same turbo engine as the 2013. I have a 2008 535 and I am quite frankly surprised by how much I like the new 3 series. The car is not that small on the inside and has all the creature comforts. Great car all in all.

I love my 2008 528i. I've never regretted getting it and still get a kick out driving it. Mine is a CPO and I like the peace of mind that provides.

Buying a 528

I bought a 2009 528ix CPO back in April....love this car. From what I've read this model is the most trouble free.

It's nice car, but you will have headaches especially with an automatic. Can you drive it (given what you say as 'legally blind)? My take is - there are many other good cars out there, and buy one based on your priority.

I haven't been "driving" since 2001. The culprit is Retinitis Pigmentosa. However, I still am quite a car enthusiast. I know what makes a bmw special aside from the badge. A passenger can still appreciate nice handling

I taught my wife how to drive a stick some time ago, but our honda is an automatic, and we would have to stay with an auto with the 528i. I wish there was a report with the actual probability of transmission problems. Are there e60 owners that have not encountered this issue?

I looked at alternatives to an e60 to fulfill what I want. All other cars for around $25k where deemed too "soft" or not interesting enough.

E60 Tranmission woes

I did have transmission issues, but since the car is CPO, and I have a fantastic SA, and great dealer service, they replaced the original trans no charge, and all is well. It kind of freaked me out, but everything else about the car is aces.

Sounds like a wonderful car for you. Just get the sports package. Everything else doesn't really matter. Sports package gives you the good seats and the good suspension.

The deposit is going in today for a 528i, Space gray with beige leather interior. Premium Package, Cold Weather Package and Navigation (which I really don't care about, smartphone is the best navigation). Any benefits to having this gizmo?

Anyways, the car is still under CPO until the end of 2013. It apparently has new tires. I'm very excited!

purchase

what year was the car you just lost? The newer idrive nav is quite an improvement (2010 most models) I have now owned a 2006 530, 2008 535i, 2008 528xi, and just traded the 530 in today on a 2010 535xi. The 530 currently has 98,000 miles on it and I have not had any major mechanical problems. I had the radiator replaced under CPO warranty, i replaced the water pump and the trans pan gasket in the past couple months. All in all the cost of ownership has been very reasonable. As everyone will attest, proper maintenance is a must to avoid the major headaches later.

Good luck in your search, for what it's worth the only nonnegotiable options to get are the cold weather package(especially here in Chicago) but the comfort (sport) seats will be the best money you've ever spent on a car.

I'm farther south thank you, north of Kansas City. The car I was going to get did have the cold weather package, but the one I may be getting does not. My main rules are sub 50,000 miles, space gray with premium package, for around $25K.

We found another good candidate. I will know by tomorrow afternoon.

Sorry to hear you didn't get the car. Keep Looking. IMHO I wouldn't get a BMW without CPO. I've had thousands of dollars of work done under warranty (Granted, I have the N54 535i). Peace of Mind.

FINALLY bagged a son-of-a....

The 2nd car fell through as well. The dealer in Florida didn't want to play ball with my local dealer. Within minutes we hit the jackpot with a car under the same auto group as my bmw dealer. Check this out!

2008 Space Gray with gray leather
Premium Package
Cold Weather Package
52,000 miles
CPO AND maintanance until August 2014.

I think I got a good catch. I paid a little more than I wanted to, but I think a lot in return.

The pretty blond is my wife. The tiny lady on the other picture is my mom, who we took on a ride.
