What does this part do?

Hi, could someone tell me what does the circled part do? I picked up my car from the repair shop today. It got new bumpers, but there are still some scratches on the square piece.

That is your tow hook cover.

If you don't like the scratches they are easily obtainable on line or better yet have your dealer get you one. My wife lost hers off her 328 in the car wash and the dealer took one off another one in the lot and gave it to me.

Thankfully your's, like mine, is a black bumper color and is easily replaced. In my last 535i this part was the color of the car. When ours was lost/stolen BMW was more than happy to sell me a new one. And, charge $80 to paint it the car color.

You should ask the Repair Shop provide you a new Tow Cover. Insurance is likely paying for the entire Bumper and they might be trying to save a few $$$ by using the old cover.
