NEED HELP! Fault Code P0740 ON A 96 750IL

So right when i take my car to the smog shop the deadly "check engine light" comes on and fails the test. The code is p0740 "torque converter circuit/open". After doing some research and getting opinions it seems like im gonna have to change or replace my torque converter. Is any positive that this is what needs to be done? If so, im pretty handy with cars and i am confident i can do the repair myself. Is there anyone out there that know a link of where i can get the steps of doing it myself?
