Convert Manual to Auto ?

Hello bimmers,

I got a few days ago a e64 645ci manual transmission, and I wished it to become automatic or steptronic.
Is it possible ?
An idea about the price is welcome too :-)

looks good more pix if u can of the matte black ... and i think to do a tranny swap would not be cost effective

I would think it possible but would cost some serious money (no idea how much).

That will cost a whole lotta money... I feel your pain.
Esp on a car like the 6series with so many computers and sensors everywhere. If you want a normal functioning car, it's better to buy a manual rather than convert an auto. It's doable though.

people in the states WISH to get the 6MT, consider yourself lucky

best bet would be buy a junk 650i and swap out everything.... too much trouble... but can be done...

easiest way would be to find a local dealer or owner that would consider a swap...

It depends, somehow it's cool to have total control of the transmission, but when you drive in heavy traffic it's quite painful ... but not insupportable.

I prefere to not make the car unstable and keep it like that :-)

Matte color rocks

A 6 with manual is rare here in the states. I was lucky to get mine. Talk about traffic? I live in NYC and we do not talk about distance but the TIME it takes to get from one place to the next and I do not mind he stick at all. I would not trade it for anything else.

Same here in the bay area. An '04 6MT with less than 45k was setting off bells in my mind. Just had to have her. Traffic sucks either way, so I might as well enjoy the MT when I do get a chance (usually weekends).

Hi Davy, yes its the standard from Germany, the first owner is from germany and I think he took the topline of exhaust in 2004

i know im asking the reverse question but how much would it cost to go from automatic to a 6 speed maual? not to hard cuz they make other 6 models in manual so could i get an m6 trans (not smg) and why dont u like the manual trans? hows the clutch feel? too difficult to work?

when I was still living in Germany, everyone was driving a manual, why would you want an automatic transmission. I never drove a car with automatic transmission until after I mover to Canada. Dein 6er lässt sich doch viel sportlicher mit einem manuellen Getriebe fahren. I wish I had a manual or at least paddles so I have more control.

Wow! Old thread! Auto to Manual swaps are common in other models. I don't see how it would be harder for a 6er. There is a lot to do...

Get a good mechanic you can trust and source used parts and it should be OK.

Sell it and buy an auto if that's what you're after. That said there's no way I'd consider trading my 6spd for an auto/smg

i would just leave it as is

Wow. Old thread indeed. That said love my six speed manual. Will never get anything else in a 6 series.
