New 2012 F30 Luxury Line first impressions

This is my wife's daily driver. I love the car and find it totally adequate for my 6'6" frame. I actually have more legroom in it than my 2013 Acura MDX. I love the way the car drives, and wish all cars came with a heated steering wheel - albeit with the button in a better location. The HID headlights are so cool looking with the DRL function. I totally dig the LED mood lighting inside the cabin at night but wished you could pick more color choices.

A couple of things I really don't like, though:
1. Bottom seat cushion is too flat and shallow for my large frame.
2. It is easy to slam the doors and when you do they sound very cheap! Not the thud sound I was hoping to hear.
3. I don't feel the F30 328i with the 4 turbo sounds good at low RPM; very diesel sounding.
4. I hate run flats! I don't like that I have ZERO tire to rim overhang to protect it if it gets close to the curb.
5. Trunk does not close easily as I find the need to slam it to get it latched. On another note, when it opens you better not be looking down at it or it will slam you in the face.

Thankfully, the positives more than offset the negatives.

For any kind of bigger guy, the sports seats with thigh extender pads are a must.

This. I've already scratched a rim in a small tight DC parking garage. My fault of course but still - I'm not used to absolutely no tire overhang.

I have a 335i and the doors thunk closed. I love that. I did notice on the 328s the doors are very tinny.

The sport seats are a must for bigger guys.

How is this possible? They share the same body.

Agree. The doors don't sound as heavy or solid in the F30 as my E90. Not that I mind it - the light doors are easier to shut. I don't mind either way. But yes 328 and 335 should have the same exact doors.

I hear you but there is noticeable difference between the two.

When I test drove the 335 I was very impressed by the doors. They pivot very easily. They thunk closed. Very solid. At the same dealer I pulled open and closed a new 328 in the showroom and it was a totally different feel and sound.

I agree it makes no sense but it is night and day different.

It must have had something to do with acoustics as to why one sounded different than the other.

It's placebo effect. The body, doors and hinges are identical. It makes no sense that they would sound different. Perhaps the window was open on the 328 which would make a difference.

Sorry, it's in your brain-identical part numbers and assembly on every single door component between an 328 and 335. Only thing could be if you compared '12 to '13 as they might have improved seals or assembly as now a handful of people have found the '13's to have less wind noise than a similar '12.

Maybe even both cars assembled in different locations, but that is still reaching.

I agree the F30 doors feel a little bit light and don't have that re-assuring bank vault feel when closing, to me it's part of the overall feel it has of a very light vehicle, but still decent quality. I was checking out a friend's Volvo S60 last night the doors close with a much more solid weighting. Could it be 335 doors feel different to 328 due to the increased weight of the car?

// That's how DI four pots sounds like. Same with Audi A4 2.0T or C 250 (1.8 T). I actually like it.

4. I hate run flats! I don't like that I have ZERO tire to rim overhang to protect it if it gets close to the curb.

The increased weight is from the engine and is over the front wheels, it has no affect stationary on doors which are identical between the two.

Maybe due to 328 beng inside the showroom, that could effect acoustics, or if a window is open, door closes with much less effort

I had a Mercedes C Class rental last month and was surprised at how tinny the trunk lid felt compared to my 335i and my 750 and to Ms. Audio's Jaguar.

When I closed the doors, trunk or hood on my Lexus SC300 it felt like I was closing the door to a vault. That car felt like it had been carved out of a solid block of steel.

Its BS. When I got my car back from redelivery my one complaint to the dealer was that when you closed the front doors with the windows down it sounded like the glass was loose in some way inside the door. They checked it out and everything was "normal" and they tried closing the doors on a few other cars 328 included with the windows up and down and the all sounded the same. So what the poster is telling you is not so.
cheers

Nope. Even HK has the same speaker locations and sizes for the doors.

Obviously the doors are the same on all models. But damn the 328 door in the showroom (the window was closed) did not thunk like mine does.
