Miles of a set of tires ... X5 35D

How many miles can I churn on a set of tires. 40K or less. I have to decide if I should take a 36 mo lease or 48 mo lease ... I do not want a 48 mo lease and I have to change tires before turn in ...

Between 20 and 45k.

Do keep in mind that a lease turn in must be over 4mm, whereas legal tread is 2mm. Almost surely a 36 or 48 will need new rubber for turn in.

Just buy some POS used tires on ebay, slap them on- cost you 200 for 4 tires mounted.

If you purchase upfront you can still qualify for a section 179 deduction of up to $25k if I remember right, make sure you pencil it out before you choose the lease then buy route to make sure you are making a good financial decision.

Agree with Jay.

Plus if you ARE going to buy it, the tire wear is immaterial. If you buy the car there is no inspection, damages are OK, excessive miles OK, etc, etc.

I believe your leasing strategy is wrong. One should never lease a vehicle solely based on whether he/she will have to change the tires at certain mileage and especially when if it is changed at 35k mark therefor you will extend your lease another 12 months unnecessarily so you can drive 10/15k miles and get your "money worth". I also believe that good lease should not exceed beyond 36/45. And never buy your leased vehicle at the lease end because by doing that you will end up paying full price of the vehicle unless you absolutely get huge discount which almost never happens. Here is my lease 2011 X5d MSRP $ 63475 Negotiated price $ 52000 36/45 monthly payments with $ 0 down tax incl. $ 770 = 27720. If i were to purchse my SAV at lease end i would have to pay lease end residual of $ 32400 plus tax plus $ 27720 total come out to MSRP (round fig.) hence, I would have been better of buying my SAV at negotiated $ 52000 instead of leasing not to mention I would be driving out of warranty unless I purchase extended warranty (more money). ARD whom i respect very much for his 'sagely' insights can explain this better.

Habsone, great figures, except you forgot that if you buy then you pay $52K+taxes+interest, which comes out to be around $2000 cheaper than leasing+buying. Either way I will take that call after 3 years, as if I decide to buy I will have to fork another $4.8K for the extended warranty ...
