I believe M mode makes it sportier, but I don't really know automatics.

When it in M, it accelerates slower, when in a faster, but accidentally put it in 4 instead of d, and A changed to S. I guess for sport cause it is very fast in S, but it has E but idk how to change to it. I was just wondering what all the modes are, and what they are for.

S is for Sport mode. will let engine rev out to the red line on full throttle acceleration, and will hold gears if throttle is backed off. good for driving hilly roads etc as the car isnt constantly changing gears. It also disengauges overdrive untill you reach top speed in 4th gear, then it will let overdrive kick in. this is the most "manual" setting.

M, or sometimes it will have a snowflake instead, is for slow driving, the M stands for Metro. the car will start off in 2nd gear etc, and will shift up early if it can. I personally never use it and find it useless

E is Economy, best of both worlds, and what the car will start off in whenever you turn the car off and back on again. use this for everyday driving.

to get S or M, slide whichever direction you want. for E, press down. you will see what program you have selected on your dash alongside what gear you are in, e.g. when you start the car it will say EP which is economy Park, shift to drive and it will say ED. use sport mode and select a lower range, it will say S2 etc etc.

you can shift from S to M without going through E if you so wish.

I cannot get E. When I start the car i see AP. I can move the shifter to4 and A changes to S. I can slide the switch down and A changes to M, but when i push it in for E, it stays in whatever it was in, it will not change to E. Do you just push it for E, or do you need to do something else special for it, like have it in A, then put it in 4 for S.

It is in the book, but it does not cover pushing in for E. I can push for E, but i get no change of letter in the dash.

you have a different auto than me. you have a 5-spd mine is only 4. i'd love to just say leave well enough alone, but my car never says "A" Maybe yours does rather than E? It will Say "S" if the shifter is in low gears without the M switch. "M" if i hit th eM switch, and "E" when i hit the A switch.

If yours isnt saying "S" or "M", then what does it say? "A"?

Then why wont mine say "A", but rather "E"?

This is what i got. When i start the car it says A. I can shift to M, but not E like on the switch. On my switch there is S--E--M. S isA, on the dash, but in lower gears it does change to S, i cannot get E, no-matter what, but i can get M, when i push it to M.

and the 540 owners manual doesnt outline that? Maybe youre reading a 525?

That button is not the same as mine. Again different transmissions.

The book covers all modes A,M,S, but not E. Why put E, if it is only for 525? Thanks for the help all.

It's a owners manual that is made to cover all models. So they have to put that in there.
Here's a similar thread on bf.c today about it

It's the warp speed button.

A is ASTRONOMICAL WARP SPEED
M is MEGA SUPER DUBER WARP SPEED
E is EXTREMELY OBNOXIOUS WARP SPEED

Use them with great caution and skill.

Or it can mean your car is religious. Depends on how you look at it.
