171 & 174 please help

Hi,

Here is my sad story.
On New year day i got a check engine light on my 2006 X3 3.0i M54-I think.
Read the codes 171-174.
Had them last year and intake boot was replaced at the dealer.
So it is not the intake boot.

Took it to a local shop.
They read the numbers, and sad the MAF sensor needs to be replaced.
Did that, code showed up again two weeks after.

I took it, back .. they looked for air leaks .. found nothing.

Took it to the dealer, they sad Crank Case Vent Valve is bad so as some other small problems with hoses, belts and gaskets. Total estimate over 3G

So i got all the parts needed online and went back to the local shop.

So as the result:

CCV and 4 hoses replaced.
Head gasket replaced.
Oil filter gasket replaced.
Water exp. tank replaced.
Oil pressure hose replaced.
To belts replaced.
Water hose replaced.
2 thermostats replaced.
Yes i know not all relates to the codes, but i figures if they going to open up the engine anyways, why not take care of all the old rubber at one shot.

1500 spent 1/2 the dealers cost.

2 days after check engine light is back on.

NOW WHAT ?

What else is left to replace that may throw this 171 174 codes ?

Please help !!

At least most of these items are maintenance items anyways, so you're not wasting your money.
Have you checked the DISA flap? That can throw this code.

How do you do that ?

How do you check that, short of getting a replacement for it ?

I also found that a fuel filter can be a problem as well ?

The O2 sensors read out fine, without a problem.

Precat O2 sensors, fuel pump and fuel filter. O2 sensors will only read bad if they fail completely, but what they really do is become inaccurate with age. They are a normal replacement item at 100K miles.

DISA First

I am going to go with DISA first.
Sounds like easy replacement.
If that does not work, fuel filter will be next.
Funny part is that can only had 60K on it, and was on SPO just 8 month ago.

I don't know, at only 60K miles the DISA should still be fine.

So should the fuel filter unless there's something in the car's history you don't know about.

Maybe see if the local shop will check their work by doing a smoke test for leaks?

Possible that the (fragile) new intake boot got damaged during removal & replacement?

Maybe one of the four crankcase vent valve hoses not fully seated?
Such as the one to the dipstick tube or the one that threads around the top of the valve cover.

Not doubting their skills, but with the difficulty of that job there must be a few times where a new air leak gets introduced or the effects of oil accumulation can't be easily addressed.

Car history

Yes I agree, the 60k is low.

I got the car at 50K.
Car fax was fine.
Car had SPO for another year when I got it, all looked fine.
BMW will not CPO the car with problem. " My words" not BMWs ;0)

I already ordered DISA, so will see if it cures the problem.

for 90$ an hour my performance shop better not make more problems ;0)

But also at 60K CCV valves and hoses do not crack, and the water expansion tanks do not crack in 1/2 and so on and so forth.

So maybe i got lucky, maybe the car was a north car.

OR maybe someone got really crafty with the speedo, and still went to dealer oil changes every 6-7 month.

I do not know any more..

I was hoping to get a car that runs forever.. got an X3 instead ;0)

I will report on DISA.

Mean while on the O2.

The shop just did the check, all monitors checked out OK at the idle speed.

Car starts fine and does not looks like it needs fuel ... bad filter. NO slow start.

On the other hand at 3K RPM i do see a small delay in response, that i did not see before,

And then it jumps at 4k really quick.

Maybe i am just wishfully thinking this over, but i hope that DISA flap takes care of the problem.

Any more ideas are welcome.

I hope the DISA is the culprit. My thought was to just remove and inspect your existing DISA. If it's intact you can probably return the new one you purchased, or hang on to it for future use.

Search DISA and there is a bunch of good info regarding how to test it and what it actually does. Good luck.

I went with less resistance. In this case. The fuel filter is probably much harder to change.
So i will do that last if needed.
Wish me luck

I was about to start the same thread as you did. I'm getting 171 and 174 P after ~ 200 miles since i replaced oil separator with all hoses.

so i read this as a start : http://repairpal.com/OBD-II-Code-P0171-and-P0174
it talks among other things about checking Barometric Pressure on the scan tool data. I have this OBCD reader (http://www.amazon.com/Autel-MaxiScan.../dp/B001LHVOVK)
not sure if and how i can do this...

yeah I hear you. I think they did take a few thousand miles out on mine.
I got mine at 48k I think real is somewhere +20k. so now it says 98k I think its closer to 120k.

I got mine at 49k.
And it had CPO on it and service records from the dealer.
So maybe my miles are true.
But that is even more disturbing, if i get all this problems at 60k mark.

What did you have to do on yours from 48k to 100k ?

Just to see what i am up for if i am here for a long run?

Thanks.

60k

I wonder what had to be done to my car that at 60K,
that my CVV and hoses were all bad at 60K,
So as my MAF so as my coolant expansion tank.

Has anyone else done all this at 60K ?

CEL on and off ?

HI, here is some update on my situation ;0)

Replaced DISA with aftermarket one.

Original one did not look that bad and did not have any visible physical damage on it.

I figured, it's already there why not, so i put a new one in instead of the original.

20 miles later CEL turned back on...I was disappointed to say the list ...

But while i am waiting for the fuel filter to arrive, i continue to drive the car.

You can understand my surprise, when the CEL went out after another 10 miles.

But the next morning, i started the car and it was ON again .... WTF is that ?

Drove for 20 miles with it ON.

parked the car, going home at night... it's OFF again.

Looks like a morning thickness to me.. ON in the morning OFF at night.

And now it has been off for two days ...

Have any one seen this before ? CEL going ON/OFF ?

Have you scanned the CEL again to make sure its still the 171 and 174 codes and not different ones. This is getting crazy.... I'm out of ideas other than rechecking all of your hose connections to verify everything is seated properly. That would be a chore though.

For all the people with 171 and 174 codes, read this one...

Next step, hoping the last one as well :

Finally got the smoke test done.

Emagin my surprice when the most smoke was coming out of .........

wait for it ....

OIL CAP !

go figure this one out.

Replaced the oil cap, cleared the codes, will see what happens next.
