but it's on a phone which is much smaller, eats your phone battery and an additional device that clutters your dash/cabin. i'll pass. i would rather have an oem unit than any aftermarket device that has to be attached, mounted, or held in a cup holder or something similar.

I agree. Wish we could project Waze or Google Map on the idrive LCD and control it with the idrive controller.

Watch... in the near future we will be able to slide, connect or clip on our ipads and use it as our central control system... That would be awesome

Those are the things i really miss with my old Garmin Nuvi. I've been trying to rely on my 2011 X5's nav system and it really is a pain to enter an address manually.

For instance, let's say I want directions to 1234 W. Postoak Drive in some city.

In my old reliable Garmin, you enter the street name "Postoak" and the system gives you the options for E. Postoak Dr., W Postoak Dr., etc.

In my BMW, I'd start off with "Postoak" .... and no results. So you go back and enter in W. Postoak .... no results. Then on the third try, I would use "West Postoak" and it might give me some results. Another problem is that searches for addresses like that aren't consistent. Sometimes you have to use the abbreviated West, East, North, or South .... sometimes you had to spell them out.

On some out-of-town trips, trying to get directions to some restaurant I've found on Yelp, I'll just end up using my iPhone and placing over the BMW nav screen.

Due to heavy traffic, yesterday BMW Nav used alternative routing ( utilizing back roads ) to get to my destination ( Bed Bath and Beyond store) and the navigation routed me to a dead end street surrounded by houses.. I got out of the car and looked around and saw that the store was on the other side of the houses. So I zoomed out on the map and found my own alternative route to my destination.

Notes: I used the address found on the stores website and the houses around the dead end street did not look like it was recently built.

BMW Nav did a similar thing to me a couple of years ago when I had it direct me to the Harley Museum in Milwaukee. It routed me to the parking lot of an abandoned building across the river from the museum. On the plus side, it did not tell me to drive into the river!

Different experiences I guess. I've never had the Garmin do that to me. I've owned many Garmins, starting with a GPS III in the 1990's and never had one break, in spite of using them on my motorcycle, exposed to the weather and vibration, as well as my autos/suv. I'd estimate I bought 7-8 Garmins so far, and still own about 5 of them, having given the others away to friends when I upgraded models. Currently I use a cheap LM50 on my motorcycle, and move it to the X5 when I go on long trips.

I still use my original Garmin GPS III for when I go hiking, as it runs a long time off of batteries and can leave a breadcrumb trail. It must be at least 15 years old by now and still keeps ticking.

Sorry to hear that you had a bad experience with Garmins.

Completely agree that the navigation in BMWs is subpar for what we pay for it an the brand. Starting with the interface: how in the era of touchscreens BMW still uses that damn wheel interface is beyond me. As for the data, clearly tons of room for improvement. Is the issue really TomTom? I have a TomTom unit and it has way better data than my x5 or my 1m (even though I have not updated for a while). Finally, I keep thinking that an annual data update should be part of the scheduled maintenance of the car and hence free... I mean in this day and age software upgrades are regular maintenance.

On another note one interesting thing: wife upgraded her phone to iOS 6 and went straight to get the new Google Maps App. Her phone is paired with her 2010 X5 and now when she uses the phone to get directions through Google Maps in the car, the phone automatically uses the car's sound system to provide voice directions. Pretty cool and best part is we never had to even set this up, it just started doing it by itself...

I have used several Nav systems in various cars and NONE of them are as good as my $100 Tom Tom which includes lifetime updates for free.

This is my second Tom Tom and I would use it over any car Navs I have ever seen. It's too bad you can't retro fit an aftermarket Nav system so it would be integrated with the car speakers.

Touchscreens are amazing for operating portable devices at a small viewing distance, Problem is that there a PITA when your driving a 2 ton block of steel with alot of momentum at say quite far from your line of sight. the NHTSA recognizes this and put in a requirement for the not-so distant future to have all electronics in the line of sight, hence your not gonna be able to touch anything easily at least. For a car, the rotary knob is a great interface. Its stationary, doesnt have weird calibrations (Im looking at you LEXUS) and plus its getting handwriting rec.

Yes automakers stink at the software they use, but the hardware is pretty robust and thought out.

at least these current bmw navigation units are a step up from the mk3/mk4 navigation used in the past... i had them in two different bmw and they never worked great once you left any large city. very annoying if you were going somewhere new and going back to that time frame navigation on your phone wasnt an option and there wasnt google maps etc.

I am on an overnight test drive on a 1010 e60. I used the nav to take me home. Thank goodness I know where I live and how to get there. The unit wanted to take the most direct route, including dirt roads, creeks, and just the wrong way, off the highway. Yet as I proceeded the proper direction it continued to want to send me back for at least three highway exits before it re calibrated. The original eta was 8:45, my way I got home AT 6:15. JUST ON THE FIRST TRY I NOW KNOW IT IS USELESS (sorry about the caps), 2000 dollars for a undependable unit. Pissed! It even tried to send me in circle when I went a different way than it told me in my own neighborhood, did not change to the proper way until there was NO other option, might be a deal breaker. Feel stupid with a windshield gps in a expensive car like this, I see that I am not alone.................Catch

I've found the UK's postal code system is the best for Navi, put it in and then the house/building number and you're done since the Postal Code goes down to the exact block you're looking for, don't need that town or the street.

Here, I choose Denver, name of the street and it prompts me for 15 neighborhoods in Denver that the street goes through, have to try each one until I find the correct neighborhood that has the range of house numbers that fits the address I'm trying to find.
