Tinting '13 X3 to match privacy glass
So I have a '13 X3 on order and it is coming with privacy glass.
I would like to tint the whole car including the privacy glass on the rears and the rear windshield. I am hoping to: 1. Tint the whole car to match as close as possible. 2. Use a film that would help with hear reduction. (I'm in Texas!) What percentage film should I use on the drivers and passenger windows? What percentage film should I use on the rear windows privacy glass and rear winshield privacy glass? I would normally tint 35% all around but have not worked with privacy glass. I'm thinking of using LLumar ceramatrix tint. Thanks for the help! |

I would suggest checking state/local laws related to tinting, if you haven't already, and don't exceed those.

Mass laws are much more restrictive. Too dark = unsafe in my opinion but, YMMV.

I've read that the rear is 35% stock. That's lighter than most SUVs which the tint guy said are around 20% normally. I wanted darker in the rear and a lighter tint in front. This helped with legal issues and keeps it looking more stock because of the discrepancy. I put an additional 35% on the rears and 35% on the fronts. This makes it essentially 13% on the rear and 35% in the front. With the large sunroof and my oyster interior, taking the rear to 13% still makes it look about the standard privacy tint on most luxury SUVs. You can just barely see inside the trunk.
Went with the Suntek CXP films to block out heat and last longer. |

I also have the rear view and top view cameras so it doesn't hurt my reversing/parking at night.

35% matches privacy glass
Just got the 3M tint in 35% and it matches the privacy glass nearly perfect IMHO. Do check what's legal in your location. Since I live in a more rural county, I could have gone darker, but I think it would make night and twilight driving a little too challenging. Good Luck!

+1 on the 35%
But you also have to look at the colour of the tint. I got the Llumar CTX ceramic film done on mine, 30% (since they don't have 35%)... it's very slightly darker than the rear privacy glass, and a shade bluer. Not big deal, but just enough to be annoying to someone who's as anal as myself. |
