Chirping noise from the AC fan...

Last week I noticed that when I would brake hard, I could hear a chirping noise coming from the dashboard. Upon closer inspection, I determined that it was coming from the AC fan, as it would not do that noise with the AC off.

After a few hours, it was more persistent, particularly after a hard stop.

I took it to the dealer and they confirmed that due to the way the fan sits, vertically instead of horizontally, the bearings tend to wear, and during a hard braking or acceleration it could wobble a bit and cause friction and noise.

4 hours later I picked up my car, with a new AC fan, and the noise is gone.

BTW, my car has now almost 20,000 miles and 16 months, and this is the first time I had to do any type of warranty work at all. I would rate this as extremely reliable.

Thought this may be useful if you hear that weird chirping noise in yours and don't know where is coming from...

Glad they took care of it pretty quickly. I've heard that type of noise in other cars, it happens. Usually more noticeable when the fan is at a low speed.

PS -- you better make another post to move off that "666" count .

I've had the same exact problem with my car for a while now; happens randomly, though.

Was your noise persistent?

No, it was intermittent. As a matter of fact, as soon as I pulled into the dealer, the noise stopped...

I told the service guy that I didn't want to leave my car for a day only to be told they couldn't find anything wrong, so I drove away, and lo and behold, 2 blocks away the noise came back, so I drove back to the dealer, got a technician on board and he heard the noise and told me he would personally take care of it.

Great service, as always, from Advantage downtown. Brian King is a great SA and always takes great care of me.

I think a fan should last more than 20k miles. I understand they wear, but maybe 10-20 years later, not 16 months.

Hopefully you just got a bad fan.

I had this exact same chirping start about 2k mi ago (I'm at just under 25k, coming up on two years). Comes from the center console and not limited to AC use - any HVAC flow with cause it. Very, very intermittent - last time I was in for service I couldn't reproduce it. Glad to hear the fix is quick - I'm sure I'll get it chirp one of these days when it's in for service.

The only other mild annoyance I have is when it's cold (I should say 'cool' [living in LA]) in the morning and I'm stopped and standing on the brake, I'll get a vibration/buzzing from driver side forward corner of the dash. The second I let up off the brake it's gone. Maybe a loose fastener?
