Correct & complete aux install

hello paper, thanks for sharing this great work with every one here, my question here is did you have the aux already showing on your screen even before putting the retrofit? in my bmw i have got ( fm.am.cd.cdc.tone) would that cable work for my car? i mean once i connect the cable into the back of my head unit will that aux sign starts to show up automataically on the screen?

No , some coding is needed to add aux to your MMI Screen .
You would need the correct cable & NCS Expert for the coding .

PAPER, I have been trying to find a way to install a AUX port in the car ever since I got it. The only option was to remove the 6 CD Changer and install an iPOD adaptor. And this cost $1200…so I stayed away. But I found your post and WOW great JOB!!!

I have since bought the AUX mod and changed the sequence to 2,7,8 and installed it in my car. The AUX category didn’t come up so I guess I have to use NCS expert and do some programming.

I installed everything as instructed and programed the MMI to show the AUX on the menu screen but when I click on it with my phone plugged into the AUX cord the FM stations just turn grey and now volume control or sound comes out. Can anyone help me with this?

What does it do when you select aux on the MMI ?

No music come out and the radio stations stay on the screen but are greyed out

ok let me try to be clearer for you . When you push the I-drive knob
& select Aux , what shows up on the screen ?
Does the Aux volume control show up & can you adjust it ?

Also take a pic of the screen with your phone & post it up so
I can see what is on your screen .

When I select AUX it stays like that with no music.

Ok what happens when you push the I-drive
Knob down ?
& the only thing I see gray is the cd player
& that is probably cause you don't have a
Cd in it

When you use the auxiliary it should change to
The auxiliary volume control . Watch my video
& you can see what is supposed to be on the MMI screen after you select Aux

Sorry I was driving down the road trying to take that picture and must have pulled the cord out a little. Here is a picture with it plugged in, the stations grey out and no music plays and no volume control shows up. I tried pushing the idrive down several times and nothing happens.

Only thing I can think of is your car is
Not coded correctly or your ask unit
Is not the right ask unit for auxiliary .
Not muxh I can do without having the
car here so I can look at it .

To me it just looks like your listening to the
fm radio & you have the dial on aux before you
actually select aux as the item to be used .

ya your right, but either way I try to select AUX and it wont select it or play music.

Paper is right. i had the same thing and as soon as i replaced the ASK unit to a newer version it worked like a charm.
this project has two sections. one is the coding to enable the AUX in the MMIGT (or whatever that section of the coding is named). it looks like you got that part. as soon as you code it the AUX becomes available and selectable. the other part is the ASK unit. it has to be 06/06 or newer. mine was 01/06 and it wouldn't work. as soon as i put there a newer unit it works great.

the sound quality though (playing through my iphone) is not the same as radio or cd. it is lacking the bass and deep sounds like a true cd quality.
is there something i can do to improve the sound quality?
don't get me wrong. i love the fact that i can play music through my iphone but i wish the sound quality was better/deeper.

if you are referring to the sound settings of the car audio then yes i have adjusted them

I have been researching AUX input and NCS Expect and playing around with it, but don't want to mess up the MMI unit. Anyways my car was built 01/06 so I think I have to buy a 06/06 ask unit or newer. Do you have one for sale? I found a few on ebay but thought I might try the forum first.

As for Ask & L7 repairs , I posted a topic
In the DIY section so you can do it yourself .
All the chips are easily available on Ebay .

Now for your Ask unit , I would buy the
auxiliary plug 1st before replacing your
ASK unit . It may or may not work , I have
Had both good & bad luck with Ask units
With 01/06 & 02/06 dates . A couple have
Worked fine & a couple didn't .

But I do have 1 for sale if tou need it ...
