The 320i will be more of a boon to sales than the F32.

With a sticker starting at $33K, the 320i is a true bargain and will be flying off the lots.

In 2010 or 2011 including 323i, BMW Canada was selling more 3-series than the Camry or Accord (I don't remember). Montreal had the highest 3-series concentration in North America, IIRC.

Just in the past week I'm now seeing one or two F30s a day on the roads, very rare before that.

probably 90% of those were the 2.5L model. I best when the 320i comes out that ATS number will dop a lot.

Very possible. The market is very flexible.

My guess is that ATS sales overall will increase as the car becomes better known.

It's fun to watch.

I agree with you that the 320i will put a huge amount of pressure on the ATS, but you're absolutely wrong that 90% of ATS sales are the 2.5. Not even close. The 2.0 turbo is the best seller, as they've been offering it on a $299 lease (only around $20 more per month than the 2.5 lease). Not that many buyers in this segment are unwilling to spend twenty bucks a month for a much better engine.

Wouldn't be surprised if pressure from the 320i forces Cadillac to cut the price of the ATS and offer some variant of the 2.0 turbo as the standard engine.

According to GM, 70% of ATS buyers last month were new to Cadillac, 60% new to GM, and the no. 1 conquest was 3 Series drivers. A certain percentage of 3 Series drivers will switch to ATS, but the percentage may not be large enough to pose a big threat to 3 sales.

I was considering an ATS myself, but the idea was stopped right in the tracks by the wife.

I've been monitoring the nationwide ATS inventory on cars.com. It's far from an exact method, but it's enough for me to know that your 90% estimate is off by miles.

At the moment, the nationwide ATS inventory on cars.com breaks down like this:

42% 2.5
38% 2.0T
20% 3.6 V6

A few weeks ago, the inventory was approximately:

38% 2.5
44% 2.0T
18% 3.6 V6

First of all, consider the raw numbers of the various configurations on dealer lots. Approximately 60% of ATSs in dealer inventory are something other than the 2.5. That alone would call into question the idea that anything close to 90% of sales are coming from the 2.5.

Of course, one might hypothesize that, sure, GM can build all the higher-trim ATSs that it wants but maybe all those 2.0Ts and V6s are just gathering dust on the dealer lots while the lowly 2.5 making up just 40% of ATSs built is responsible for 90% of ATSs sold. Anyone can see how far-fetched that is.

The V6 may not be selling very well but clearly the turbo is. Over the past few weeks, the 2.0T has dropped as a percentage of vehicles in inventory. This is consistent with the cheap $299 lease on the 2.0T.

320i will be huge. It might have a puny engine, but the price and the roundel prestige? Priceless.

There is one in the parking lot at work that has been sitting there for what seems like two weeks. I don't like the tapering of the windows in the back, but overall, it looks a lot nicer than in any picture I have seen. I just got curious and checked out the Cadillac website. This car is no bargain in terms of pricing when compared to the German competition, at least in terms of MSRP.

$299/mo on the ATS, $329/mo on the 3, and slightly more on the C250; meanwhile Audi doesn't even seem to have any lease specials on the A4 right now. Perhaps they know they can't win in the number race so they'd rather make more profits per car? It's interesting how which brand is a better value depending on whether you are leasing or buying.

I built a basic 2.0t 6mt which comes standard with a an LSD for under $35k.

GM said 20% fleet sales, but I suspect most of it is Chevy brand and trucks or cheap rentals.

If you drive a manual, there is more reason to consider an ATS because LSD is standard on the manual, but unfortunately manual is only available on 2.0T.

Currently ATS has some of the best lease deals out there in this segment.

Check you numbers BJ - A4 sales up 14% in Feb 2013 vs Feb 2012
All in all, without the X1 in Feb, BMW sales are tanking for the 2nd month in a row.
