Power Steering Pump Only?

on my 1988 325 e30.

On a cold start after a cold night she is extremely noisy. Playing with the wheel a bit for a few minutes while she warms up eases the chatter slightly. After about 10-15 mins when the engine has warmed the chatter seems to die, however, still gets noisy on some turns. Fluid seems to be leaking as well every 3-5 days reservoir is nearly empty.

Only has 126,000 on it so I'm wondering whether a pump and hose replacement should do the trick. I'm also a first time bmw owner and will be having a prior bmw mechanic friend do the work for me. Just looking for ideas, suggestions...

Blown Rack, see rackdocktor.com. You can try to see if the rack will seal with a atf leakstopper. This band-aid is 90% futile though. Buy a rebuild Rack from Jim and go from there. Racks come with inner tie rod assemblies. Reuse your old outer tierods unless they are crap. If crap by some Lemforders/Meyle's and replace. The pump might quieten down with a non leaking rack. Two different P/S pumps are installed. Vickers and ZF. ZF is common, Vickers PITA. Check the PnP for a pump. The stealership or rebuilds will require a visit to rape crises center. Rebuild kit to DIY is a simple process. Hose's usually last. Buy some P/S hose connection seals/washers. On the low side of P/S system, hose clamps and atf resistant hose works fine. Buy new filter/reservoir when r/r with rebuilt rack. Flush system before install of rebuilt rack and reservoir/filter.
