Mein Auto: Looking
18K miles and new tires?

Hello experts,

I found a used 2010 550i GT. It has brand new tires - which is a good thing. But i was surprised to know that they have to replace tyres at 18K miles. Dealership tells me that this was a lease return/sold in auction.

From your experience, how long stock tires last? Would you be concered about this?

Thanks.

I have the Pirelli P-Zero tires and had to replace at 22K.
They could have made a few more thousand but was leaving on a long trip and wanted to get it done.
If driven agressive 18 would not be unexpected.

It depends on the tires that came with the vehicle...the UTQG ranges from 220 to 500 or so, depending on the brand and model installed...that's over a 2:1 difference in life on the standard government test, then add how well the tire pressure was maintained and the driving style, alignment, etc.

High performance, low-profile tires on large wheels, driven aggressively do not last long, especially on a heavy vehicle. You want large, low-profile tires...you pay for it.

If you frequently drive when there is rain, the new recommendation for minimum tread depth is bigger than the legal definition. The old penny trick may be legal, but the current recommendation, not legal requirement, is to be able to still see Washington's head on a quarter. The only time low, or no tread works well is on a dry track. The stopping distance in the wet becomes much greater when you approach the minimum legal depth, and hydroplaning at speed becomes a major control issue.
