no oil pressure
Hello,
I have a 06' 530i with 146k miles with no oil pressure currently. I checked pressure with a manual guage and it showed no pressure. Can I replace the oil pump myself and if so how? I am currently in mechanic school. Or is it advisable to just take it to the dealership or other certified BMW mechanic? Thank You |

If there truly is no oil pressure you would need to have it towed to a mechanic or dealer (I'd suggest mechanic since the dealer will just look at you and your situation and start planning his kids Harvard degree).

If I am not mistaken, oil pan needs to be dropped to access the oil pump. The remove the oil pan, you will need to remove the cradle/cross members or raise the engine. If I were you, I'd look for a competent independent mechanic.

If you really have no pressure (i.e, you're sure it's not just the sensor) it could be a number of things besides the pump itself, for instance, it could be sludge build-up or a blocked intake tube/screen. But if you drove for any distance in that state, you need to decide how much money you want to sink in to an 8-year old engine with 150K miles. The lack of oil may have done serious damage to the engine, especially the valve train. Just something to consider...
