map upgrade
I have just ordered through someone in the F10 forum an upgrade to the 2013 maps for $100.
It is for my 2011 535 Xi GT Hop over F10 forum for more info |

For it to work, you need first, the maps, then second the key. The key is unique to your vehicle. You can get the media almost free - it's the key, which is partly the licensing, that is more expensive. Assuming you had to give them the VIN so they could generate a proper key, that's a decent price (about what I paid for mine). If it's just the media, it's going to cost you a bit more to actually get it all to work. My media came on a USB 32g drive. Popped into the port in the glovebox, the vehicle recognized it, asked it I wanted to upgrade the maps, then asked for the key. It will not do anything without a valid key...but, if you have one, it takes about 45-minutes, then says it's done but doesn't actually switch to the new maps until you shut down and restart. You can do this while driving, since it puts the stuff on the HD in toto, then swaps once finished. If you shut off before it finishes, you have to reenter the key to get it to resume, but it quickly moves to the point where it stopped uploading, and doesn't actually start again at the beginning.

What do you actually get?
More accurate (up to date) maps? Or is there something more to it?
Just curious. Speaking of maps though... Is it posible to complete turn of street names? I don't need them and they clutter up the display. TIA DLM

maps
I dont seriously know what the upgrades entail but I believe the maps on the 2012/2011 prob are pre 2011. When reading forum some found new stuff others did not. Thats usually the case with everything never can satisfy all.
Using the forum the upgrade are in the $100 range compared to the $250 or more from dealers. Each must decide I just love upgrading anything within means. Wifes still cheaper to keep. |

![]() Speaking of upgrades, have you done the rear foglamp upgrade? $139 for the switch and a star driver. We actually had fog in Houston this morning so I got to use it! FWIW DLM

BMW claims millions of updated points of interest and lots of updated roads. So, whether it's worth it or not, I don't know. Mine were two years old, so I figured why not.
The rear foglight tweak is easy, and yes, I did do that as well. |

I have had the upgrade installed last 7 days and must say there is very little to no difference to the 2011 maps. Personally I think its a total waste of $100 or more. Some new roads that were added ( about 10 miles worth ) in June 2012 is not there. I think this maps are probably from end of 2011. The new roads should have been added since it had been approved and started construction Nov 2011.

mmm All you need is the FSC code. Got mines for much cheaper. Since I upgraded older cars, I can see a very clear difference (My 09 could not even find my new home)

Out of curiosity, when you check the status of the navigation information, what version and date does it report? It should show 2013 and some number. The first iteration of the 2013 map set became available late fall last year and was labeled 2013...I got mine in early December. I do not know how often they get updates, but it's kind of a moot question since you don't get free access to those interim ones unless you repay for them. Even on a 2011 model, depending on when you bought it, it might have had 2012 maps on it (or 2010, for that matter). The maps do get updated through the year, and if, for some reason, yours was eligible for reloading, you might have something like Rev 1, 2, etc for that year. Just depends on when it got loaded at the factory, so a 2011 might be on the third map update, so the update to 2012 might only have a very few new entries.
Some of the updates to the maps are roads, but a lot more are points of interest (something like 7 million of them between the 2012 and 2013 map versions), maintaining the database of businesses, facilities, etc. Those you might not notice unless you did a search for a new, say, restaurant. |

Yup I updated my maps to 2013. Will check for the exact version. Both my 2011 came with 2010 maps. (they were both built in 2010)
