A/C compressor

I have a 1992 325is that has the strange habit of kicking the compressor on and off when the A/C is off. Any Ideas?

I'd do a voltage drop test to confirm a short.

The compressor might cycle if you're directing air at the windshield? Some systems use A/C to dry the air and assist in defogging. Not sure about an E36, though.

if you are running the defroster the ac compressor will kick in. it's a dehumidifier....or sorts...or, you could also have auto climate control....

i wouldn't worry too much about it unless it's operating without *anything* on....
